Life, Choice and Freedom from Fanaticism
Life, Choice and Freedom from Fanaticism
Given the polarized nature of American social life, coherent national policy is not possible without a liberation from extreme and fanatical positions. In relation to the abortion debate, the following solution is proposed:
1. Human life begins at birth. Hence abortion is not murder.
2. Choice for women is a natural right.
3. There are enough liberal advocates of abortion rights to provide for those who need a support system.
4. The government does not have to be fundamentally involved, either through repressive laws or through a welfare system for abortion.
5. Those who believe abortion is wrong can govern their own lives accordingly and be freed from the shared responsibility and costs (taxes) of supporting abortion rights.
6. No one gets everything they want. The pursuit of "everything" is fanaticism. Extremists on both left and right are attempting to have the government enforce "religious" beliefs, not sacred rights.
