If Life is an Adventure Then You Better Have the Right Tools
In the realm of wealth generation, success, investment, and finance, there are valuable lessons that inspire us to break away from the ordinary and embrace life as an adventure. Today, we distill these lessons from a conversation with Nick Devlin, a coach, entrepreneur, father, husband, and former US Army Ranger, who has walked a diverse path and offers insights into success and fulfillment that stand on their own.
Lesson 1: Breaking Away from the Norm
Nick's journey has been marked by diverse experiences, from punk rocker to army airborne ranger, manufacturing engineer to corporate manager. Looking at his experiences early on, one might judge him as unlikely to succeed. But given his success, his background underscores the importance of embracing a unique perspective on life and success. It’s important to break away from the herd, consider alternatives and live according to your own code.?
Lesson 2: Extreme Ownership
The philosophy of extreme ownership, which is owning all your choices and consequences of those choices, is one of the most powerful choices you can make for your life. As Nick says, “Forget the blame, like point all 10 fingers back at you.” If you don’t like your circumstances, embrace the change and take action on that. It can be an uncomfortable prospect but also an incredibly liberating experience. Ultimately, it's crucial to pause and evaluate whether you're living the life you desire and it takes courage to face the truth, even if it challenges your comfort zone.
Lesson 3: Don’t Go It Alone
Adventurous pursuits don't require going it alone. You’ll encounter places you don’t want to go, look for shortcuts, and get confused along the way. This is normal and should be expected anytime you set out to do something different in life. Therefore, seeking guidance and support when making significant life changes and chasing big dreams is essential. Nick advocates for? having a coach or mentor by your side to provide the needed guidance and encouragement to help you move past your habits, challenge limiting beliefs and navigate uncharted territory.
Lesson 4: Letting Go of Control
When you looked at him, Nick seemed to have everything under control. He was married, had completed his MBA and was in a great position in a growing company. On paper, everything looked great. But the truth was he was white knuckling it - grinding it out now to have future gains later. Truth was, he wasn’t actively living his life. He was on autopilot, following societal expectations.?

His awakening happened when a friend asked him, “Do you want to stay married to your wife?”. It was a shot through his system. It jolted him into realizing he needed to let go of control. All the white knuckling of life was his way of trying to control everything. Meanwhile, he’s miserable and not actually getting to where he wants to be. He realized control provided a false sense of safety and hindered his ability to experience true aliveness, passion, and possibility.
Lesson 5: Using Your Tools
Now, as he says, Nick is no longer in the safety zone but he is living more deliberately and crafting his life. It’s an adventure! Using financial tools like Infinite Banking helped Nick bridge the gaps and make living in the unknown possible. These tools offer not only investment potential but also financial flexibility and freedom if used correctly. In Nick’s case, it has helped with refinancing, paying off loans, investments, and home improvements - all while letting go of control and carving out a life of authenticity.
Lesson 6: There Is No Right Way
What if life was a series of experiments? In truth, there is no perfect “right” way and "failure" is always an opportunity for growth. Progress often arises from persistent revision and unwavering commitment to one's vision. This is, again, leaning into the uncomfortable and embracing it as a part of being an active participant in creating the future you want.?
Nick's journey is about going from living society’s dream for him, to living the dream he has for himself. He has followed his own path based on principles of financial empowerment and personal growth. In a world of endless possibilities, these lessons remind us that life is an adventure waiting to be explored. With the right mindset and support, we can achieve our financial goals and live life to the fullest.
