They Lied About The Rain AND Your Systems

It rained today.

Not that rubbish, drizzly, annoying grey vibe we get in New Zealand.

It was a proper torrential tropical thunderstorm, creating rivers of muddy water that flowed over the road and drowned everything in its path.

Including us on the way back from the gym.

Typically, rain is a bit of an inconvenience that annoys and frustrates plans.

Today, there were absolutely none of those things.

Why?

  1. Environment
  2. Perspective

Firstly, we are somewhere new.

A different environment means you behave differently. Your thinking is more expansive, open to possibilities and more curious.

It does those things because your brain has to be open to what’s changing, building new pathways. If you can harness this and sink into curiosity, you can see run-of-the-mill things differently.

Secondly, we have a different perspective on Thailand after all these years.

Scarlett’s perspective.

While Thailand was home for Jonny and me for many years, she visited only once when she was about two and has no clear memories.

Everything is new and exciting. She’s delighted by the various creatures… (even the Macaque monkeys that I’ve learned to be deeply wary of after I experienced them learning to open doors, unscrew the lids on jars and make a hell of a mess last time we were here), excited by her new mode of transport perched on the back of Dad’s scooter, curious about all the new flavours at the roadside stalls her parents love to dine at.

For Jonny and I, it could have been a bit old hat. We could have fallen into the trap of comparing everything with how it was…. 17 years ago… which is a bit rough given how much we have changed in that time.

Her perspective is playful, interested and ready to explore at any moment.

Instead of moaning about the rain, she was excited about her first tropical rain storm and ended up straight in the pool when we got home, pointing out with glee everything that was different in the rain.

It’s the same in your business.

If you haven’t been in a new environment for a while, you might have become a bit stagnant in how you view things in your business.

You don’t have to jump on a plane to create this. (Although I also highly recommend it!)

You can change your environment just by bringing new people into your world, shifting where you work, or moving the furniture around so the space feels different.

Change something in your environment and see what changes in your thinking.

Perspective is key in your business, too.

You see it from the business owner's perspective.

Useful at times but a little misinformed when it comes time to map your customer’s journey.

Funnily enough, you need to step into someone else’s shoes and play through the role. Get curious, interested and open to new ways of thinking.

If not, you will build rigid, robotic systems that ultimately don’t meet your customer's needs and will prevent you from getting the repeat business you deserve.

When this shows up for my clients, there are 3 key insights I’ve learnt over 20 years in business:

1) The right environment comes before everything else:

The number one reason I built my programs with a community is because the number one impact on your business owner's mindset is your environment and the biggest influence in an environment is the people in it. Your habits are a reflection of the habitat you spend the most time in. And you are far more influenced by the people in your world than you give credit for it. I can’t always create a physical space for my clients but I can create a virtual environment that helps set their mindset in the right direction for business success. If you are struggling with taking action on anything (including fixing your systems), it’s likely you have a space cluttered with crap. That could be physical items, people who are constantly negative, flat and heavy emotions or even digital stuff - think crap in, crap out. If you are consuming negativity, bad news, and other people’s emotional dysregulation regularly, it will show up not just in you but in your business too.

Your systems in our business are a reflection of the environment they were built in - check in and make sure yours were built in the right space for your customers.

2) They don’t think like you, but you do have the same needs:

Ever wondered why your leads and customers don’t follow the clear pathway you built for them to first buy your product or service and then use it? Because they won’t think like you. Inconvenient but true. Luckily, though you do have the same human needs as your customers. Your job is to take those human needs and apply them to your customer journey from your perspective AND from your customers. This way, you build a business that creates raving customers and allows you to build a business that serves you and your life.

Map out the steps you intended your customer to take. It’s pretty likely when they jump the tracks or fall through the gaps you missed fulfilling their needs. And if you can’t spot it how can your team ever replicate it.

3) Everything has a recipe:

When you run a business that has everyone asking for you, it’s easy to think you are the secret sauce. And that’s a nasty ball and chain to wrap around your own leg. Thinking that you have some magic in your pocket, that you can’t share with your team is a lie. Even the witches could write down and share their magic. The way you love your leads and clients has a clear recipe. You need to step back, break it down and then share it so someone else can repeat it.

Clients who embrace the process build out the systems and the bigger culture, energy, and personality they want their business to have. They enjoy the freedom that comes from designing the Secret Sauce Recipe, a team that is empowered to use it, and a business that can run without them.

I don’t do the work. They do.

I provide weekly support, experience and insight.

Help them systemically see the magic. Work is required.
