LIBERTY Steel Leads the Way with Ecoke

The chance to eliminate carbon emissions at a stroke from such a hard to abate sector as steel seems almost too good to be true. But that's the opportunity opened up by Ecoke – a breakthrough new sustainable material to replace coal being pioneered by LIBERTY Steel UK (LSUK).

Speaking at the Breakthrough Technology conference on the sidelines of COP28, LIBERTY Steel's Head of Environment and Sustainability, Ed Heath-Whyte, shared the results of our successful Ecoke trials, and how it promises to transform the steel industry's carbon footprint.

Ecoke briquettes, made by CPL Industries, replace anthracite coal, the main source of charge carbon in electric steelmaking. LSUK's first trials in 2022 used a product called ecoke?30 that is a 30% biomass and 70% anthracite mix.

Ecoke briquettes

Those trials found it slashed direct carbon emissions from electric arc furnaces by up to 30%. Further work this year has focused on a new product – ecoke?100 – that’s 100% biomass. There had been concern that ecoke 100 might reduce performance,?and increase costs because ecoke costs more per tonne than anthracite. The great news is that Ecoke 100's melting performance is just as good, and the Environment Agency has confirmed that Ecoke has no impact on water, ground, or waste. Additionally, since it is considered biomass and is not subject to the UK's Emission Trading System, the cost impact is minimal.

Since mid-2023 LSUK has been utilising Ecoke 100 in steel production. It has meant LSUK can reduce its carbon footprint immediately while maintaining focus on high quality steels.

Ecoke is a pioneering product that opens up significant opportunities across LIBERTY's global business and steel industry worldwide. It's the ideal complement to LSUK's innovation making high-precision downstream products for strategic sectors such as defence, aerospace and energy. And it's proof that electric steelmakers can be truly Green if we think differently and accept new ways of working for the future.

Great work Ed Heath-Whyte, CEnv Dr Keith Walker Claire Neilson Can this be used in lance carbon injection for foaming slag practices on UHP furnaces?
