Liberty goes F1 + MotoGP!
I did not intend to work today but.. as always big news fight my free time.
As someone who worked for both F1 and MotoGP in the 1990s and launched the first dorna.com website, I can't help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing the news of Liberty Media's acquisition of MotoGP. Pride, excitement, and a touch of nostalgia all come to mind as I reflect on this significant milestone for the sport I hold so dear.
When I first started working on the digital presence for MotoGP, the internet was still in its early stages. We knew the potential was there to connect with fans globally, but the full scope of what could be achieved was still unknown. Launching that initial website was a leap of faith, but it was also an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of something new and innovative in motorsports.
Fast forward to today, and it's incredible to see how far MotoGP has come. The sport has grown tremendously, attracting fans and top talent from around the world. The passion, speed, and fierce competition that define MotoGP have only grown stronger over the years, cementing its position as one of the most thrilling championships in all of motorsports.
Now, with Liberty Media's acquisition, I believe MotoGP is poised for even greater success. Liberty's track record in developing and promoting sports properties is impressive, and their expertise in areas like media distribution and fan engagement will be invaluable in taking MotoGP to the next level.
What excites me most is the potential to introduce MotoGP to an even wider audience. The sport has always had a dedicated fanbase, but with Liberty's global reach and resources, there's an opportunity to attract new fans from all corners of the world. The thought of more people experiencing the adrenaline, the drama, and the incredible skill of MotoGP racing is thrilling.
At the same time, I'm glad to see that the core of what makes MotoGP special will remain intact. With Carmelo Ezpeleta continuing as CEO and Dorna operating independently, the heart and soul of the sport will be preserved. The management team's retention of a stake in the business ensures they'll be deeply invested in MotoGP's long-term success.
As I look back on my time working with MotoGP and launching that first website, I feel a sense of pride in having played a small part in the sport's journey to this point. Seeing the value placed on MotoGP in this acquisition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved over the years.
Now, as MotoGP enters this new chapter, I couldn't be more excited to see where it goes next. With Liberty and Dorna working together, I believe the possibilities are endless. The future is bright for MotoGP, and I'll be cheering it on every step of the way, just as I have since those early days of building its digital presence. Here's to the next era of MotoGP – may it be the most thrilling and successful yet!
