Liberia to Get $48m Iconic Hilton Hotel Investment -As Pres. Weah Signs Bali Island Act, Two Others into Law

Liberia is to shortly benefit from an inter-continental Hilton Hotel Investment to be erected on Liberia’s newest city ‘the Bali Island’.

The construction of the iconic Hilton Hotel in Liberia is value at Forty-eight Million United States dollars (US$48Million).

The Hilton Hotel is expected to add to Liberia’s turism industry world class hospitality which will include  192 standard and deluxe rooms, a casino, fully functional spas, state of the art conference facility, gymnasium, restaurants among others facilities.

It may be recall that President George M. Weah in his inaugural speech announced that Liberia is open for business.

This is made evident by a landmark $48 Million investment by Hilton Hotel, one of the world’s giants in the hospitality industry.

Addressing the official Management Agreement signing ceremony with the Hospitality Concept& Allied Services Limited at the John Gbessey Resort in Paynesville, last week, Hilton’s Representative, Geri Wessels, said her company is proud to launch its flagship hospitality brand in Liberia.

She divulged that the construction and completion of the Hilton Hotel and Resort in Liberia will help support the development dreams of the country and change significantly the landscape of the hospitality system in Liberia.

As a global company, she emphasized, Hilton seeks greater opportunities in tourism and business travels in Monrovia as the country is ready for growth in these areas.

“We are focused on providing increased connectivity and improved infrastructures to make a travel smoother Monrovia and particular when we realized its potential”, she said.

In his remarks, Hospitality Concept & Allied Services Limited representative, Chukwunonso Vincent Iweanoge, recounted the impact of the investment on the Liberian economy. The implication of this project for Liberia is immense. I have been in Liberia for the past 10 years and have seen the potential for investment in the hospitality sector”, he said.

He said: “the impact of this project in Liberia cannot be overemphasized. We are committed to putting Liberia back on the globe. This Hotel will do so much for the country. It will open the Liberian tourism sector by attracting more tourists. It will employ over 300 people full time”.

Also speaking, Deputy Information Minister for Culture and Tourism Lens Gbargonyon said the investment is in fulfillment of the President’s declaration that Liberia is open for business for which the tourism sector is of no exception.

He said “Liberia has a very huge tourism potential and all we need is the right investment that will make Liberia a tourist destination. At the Ministry of Information Culture Affairs and Tourism, our strategic plan emphasized hospitality and accommodation as key on our agenda. We appreciate people coming to invest in those sectors. We believe the construction of the Hotel will not only provide jobs but will help attract tourists in this area”.

Meanwhile President George Manneh Weah has signed into law three major Acts of the Legislature, including an Act to name the Bali Island and the Mohatma Gandhi Convention Center.

The purpose of the Bali Island Act is to officially name a specific parcel of the land Bali Island and a proposed convention center as the Mahatma Gandhi Convention Center.

The other two Acts passed by the 54th Legislature and signed by President Weah are the “Act to Amend the Revenue Code of Liberia, A.D. 2000, as amended by the Consolidated Tax Amendment Act of 2011 to Reform Excise Tax Law (2018)” and the “Act to Ratify the International Convention on the Mutual Administrative Assistance for the Prevention, Investigation and Repression of Customs Offences (Nairobi, 9 [June] 1977) World Customs Organization”.

WHAT A STINKY FARCE! What does a $48 million hotel investment do for ordinary Liberians if they don’t have a single decent medical facility in the country they can afford when they are sick and when they kids have no decent schools to attend? A few very low-paying jobs will be created. And then what? The majority of those working at that hotel will not be able to afford a meal at its restaurant let alone afford to spend a night there! The Liberian people are not fooled by President Weah going around and showing his white teeth around the city and country when he announces these events that either have very little impact on real, every day people or only falsely raise the hopes and expectations of our people - like when he went to a rice importer’s facility a week or so ago and announced (white teeth in full shine and all) that he was purchasing 2,000 bags of rice.

I am reminded of the numerous announcements the crooked, corrupt, inept and incompetent Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration made over a period of two 6-year terms about $700 million investments, $7 billion investments, etc. They never changed a damn thing for ordinary Liberians. The only people who benefitted from those dog-gone crooked deals were Ellen, her children and other relatives, in addition to her political cronies and prominent members of the Liberian Legislature. And here another Liberian administration is at it again: making rounds of announcements of $$$$ million investments here and there. It’s all a damn farce. It’s nothing but a public relations gambit. Six or twelve years from now, things will NOT be one inch better for regular, every day folks in Liberia. Our people will still be plagued by typhoid, malaria, undetected high blood pressure, undetected high blood sugar levels, and undetected cases of diabetes. Schools and universities in the country will still be grossly below par, even when compared to where they used to be 30 to 40 years ago. One wonders when the crooks who call themselves leaders will stop taking our people for granted. When will they stop their PR maneuvers and mean business.
