Reformierakond elect PM Michal as new leader

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal was elected as the new leader of Eesti Reformierakond at a party Congress on 8 September. Michal was sworn in as Prime Minister in July after previous leader Kaja Kallas left to become the European Union’s next candidate for the role of High Representative for Foreign Affairs (HR/VP).

Draghi report urges EU action on competitiveness

European liberals welcome the launch of Mario Draghi’s report entitled “The future of European competitiveness” and stress the need for immediate action by the new European Commission. Liberals do not want to compromise on European welfare, environment or freedoms, and call on the European Commission and EU Member States to act accordingly.

Renew Europe MEPs sign Ostend declaration

On 11 September, Renew Europe members adopted the Ostend declaration, detailing expectations for parliamentary hearings of prospective candidates for the roles of European Commissioners. In addition, members pinpointed liberty, prosperity and security as the key priorities for the first 100 days of the incoming Commission.
