LGBBTQIA+ CRG spotlight: Troy Steece

Meet Troy Steece, a member of BPM's LGBTQIA+ Colleague Resource Group (CRG), who is dedicated to fostering a workplace culture of inclusivity and authenticity. He is?a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ visibility and representation at work. Read the Q&A below to learn more about Troy's experiences?with helping?others feel empowered to be themselves in the workplace.

What inspired you to join our LGBTQIA+ CRG, and how has your involvement impacted your sense of belonging at BPM?

I joined BPM's LGBTQIA+ CRG because I want people at the Firm to feel comfortable being their authentic selves at work. The more employees that belong to this community and the more they witness people living their authentic lives, the more comfortable they’ll feel doing it themselves.

What initiatives or events have you been involved in through the LGBTQIA+ CRG that you’re particularly proud of?

As part?of BPM's "Because People Matter" social media campaign, I was featured during Pride?Month,?celebrating?our LGBTQIA+ CRG colleagues. This initiative underscores BPM's dedication to spotlighting our diverse and talented team, especially when we continue to navigate remote work environments.

Can you share a personal story or experience highlighting the importance of LGBTQIA+ visibility and representation in the workplace?

I used to attend the “Reaching Out” MBA conference when I was with another organization. I was able to share my story with candidates and let them know it’s perfectly okay to be themselves at work. No one should have to hide who their significant other is. This greatly impacted a specific candidate who ended up joining our organization and coming out at work.

What advice would you give young LGBTQIA+ professionals who are just starting their careers and may face unique challenges?

Be your authentic self. Don’t hide who you are for fear of being discovered. As you progress in your career, continue seeking allies and mentors within BPM and beyond. Surrounding yourself with supportive individuals can provide valuable insights and encouragement as you navigate your professional journey.

Troy coaches and plays in the Dallas PSSA gay softball league. He's been playing in this league since 2009.

How can allies support the LGBTQIA+ community within the workplace?

Simply attending our CRG meetings and showing your support is enough. It shows that, even though you may not be part of our community, you won’t judge someone’s work or character based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.?
