LG Chem has announced a joint venture with ADM to produce polylactic acid in the USA

ADM, a global agribusiness giant, has partnered with South Korean chemical company, LG Chem to explore lactic acid production in the USA. Both the companies signed a memorandum of understanding for the project to meet the growing demand for a range of plant-based products, including bioplastics such as polylactic acid. The companies planned to launch a joint venture early next year that would build, own, and operate a US-based facility to produce high-purity corn-based lactic acid on a commercial scale.
With the growing demand for bioplastics in the plastic industry, polylactic acid is one of the first renewable polymers to compete with traditional polymers in terms of performance and environmental impact; Polylactic acid emits three times less CO2 emissions and could very well reconcile plastic with the planet.
