Leyr: Digitalization in Patient Data

In the evolving landscape of healthcare, the digitalisation of patient data emerges as a frontier, with both great challenges and even greater opportunities. With the growing reliance on Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) the need for innovative solutions to manage, secure, and integrate these data sets becomes increasingly apparent.

Against this backdrop, Leyr , an innovative company headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, stands at the forefront of digital transformation in healthcare. Leveraging expertise in handling complex medical data, Leyr offers a robust platform that ensures interoperability, scalable and secure access to EMRs, addressing critical concerns regarding data privacy and integrity.

We asked Helena Holma CEO and Co-founder at Leyr about the companies mission and the current state of digitalisation in healthcare with focus on their home market in the Nordics.

Healthcare in the Nordics is digitally advanced, particularly with electronic medical records (EMRs) and digital consultation solutions, surpassing many other regions in Europe. However, it is still difficult for patients to schedule or reschedule their own appointments and we still have a long way to go compared to other sectors like finance or insurance.

What led you to identify the now obvious need for connecting health tech to legacy EMR systems?

I have a background as a medical doctor and I've experienced the problems with fragmented patient data. When you can't access the patient data you need to make a proper assessment, it has a negative effect on patient safety and makes everyday work very inefficient.
I've also worked at a health-tech startup and experienced how difficult it is to integrate with EMRs, both in terms of resources, time, and money. My cofounder Anton Lytvynovskyi has a technical background in open banking, and solved a similar problem in the finance sector so there are learnings to benefit from there.

Do you see your company as part of a rapidly changing landscape - facilitating access for digital health companies?

Yes we do - the digitalisation of healthcare has accelerated in recent years, and to truly benefit from this innovation, new solutions need to be integrated with EMRs. If we don't integrate systems, the issue of patient data fragmentation will continue to grow, and we'll be building a house of cards and that's why I wanted to solve this problem.

What are the key (data) safety considerations that you have to be aware of - and what are the potential hazards?

When building applications in the healthcare space, it is essential to be aware of the existing regulations and adapt your solution accordingly. If your product is not compliant with regulation, it will not be viable on the market. We also see an increasing threat against healthcare IT, and it is important to build trust by prioritising cybersecurity and privacy.

What advice would you give companies when dealing with EMRs and connecting with the healthcare system?

Integrations with EMRs might seem like a very technical feature, but it's necessary to be aware that they have an impact on workflows as well as the user experience for patients. Therefore, it is necessary to prioritise if you want to build the best possible user experience.
The Leyr unified API reduces the amount of both time and resources health-tech companies have to spend on building and maintaining integrations to EMRs since only one integration to our platform is needed and then you get access to all the EMRs you need.

Key Takeaways:

As always, approach integrations with a strong focus on patient safety and regulatory compliance, consider Helenas experience as a medical doctor and look to address inefficiency but don't be overwhelmed by highly technical solutions. And remember - collaboration between startups and enterprise can bring powerful solutions to difficult challenges!

Thanks again to Helena Holma for engaging and sharing her valuable insights into building a company that solves a clear need.

Now, we turn to you: Who else in the life science sector is working on the intersection between health and data!?

Let's continue the dialogue. ?? #healthcare #data #compliance #patientsafety #nordics #medtech #Rekonnect
