JOB MARKET INSIGHTS
The national job market has seen significant shifts this quarter. Here are the key statistics and trends:
In August, job ad volumes saw a marginal increase of 0.3% month-on-month, reflecting stabilisation in the job market. However, when compared to August 2023, national job ads were down by 13%, indicating a tougher year for job demand. Applications per job ad rose by 0.5%, showing increased activity from jobseekers.
Leigh Broderick, Head of Employment Analytics at SEEK, highlighted that "demand continues to be lower across most industries, though some of those most impacted have started to recover." Growth in Victoria (2.7%) and New South Wales (0.9%) helped drive national job ads up, while Northern Territory (-6.7%) and Western Australia (-4.4%) experienced declines.
These trends show mixed regional performance, with some states rebounding faster than others.

WHAT’S TRENDING?
GenAI: From Job Reductions to Employee Reallocation
The hype around Generative AI (GenAI) is settling, with 67% of HR leaders expecting to reallocate employees affected by the technology rather than reduce their workforce, according to Gartner's June 2024 Labour Market Outlook. Additionally, 52% of HR leaders have no plans to decrease their headcount whatsoever, due to GenAI.
However, interest is declining. A Deloitte report shows fewer executives are interested in GenAI, and Gartner predicts that 30% of GenAI projects will be abandoned by 2025. Despite this, experts like Aaron McEwan from Gartner advise HR leaders to continue investing in GenAI, using it to reskill employees and enhance performance.

Why Nearly a Third of Aussie Workers Are Quitting — And It’s Not the Pay
A recent Indeed report reveals that almost one in three Australian employees have resigned because of an annoying co-worker.
The top culprit? Poor personal hygiene troubles 58% of workers. Gossiping (49%) and talking over others (48%) also rank high on the list. Managers aren’t exempt either, with 51% of employees frustrated by hypocrisy and 49% irritated by micromanagement.
Over two-thirds say these habits cause stress and create a toxic workplace, but traits like reliability (66%) and honesty (60%) are what workers appreciate most in their teams.
Take a moment: If you’re a colleague, could your habits impact your team? And if you’re a manager, how can you foster a more positive and respectful workplace?
