Leveraging Networking Events for Professional Growth

?

Earlier this week I attended the Small Business Expo here where I live in Philadelphia, Pa. It had been a few years since I attended one, mostly due to the recent Pandemic sweeping the globe. So getting out among people, especially these smiling ambitious entrepreneurs was a pleasing experience.

?

Due to the rapid advancements in technology, it was a very streamlined and enjoyable get together as far as sharing information and networking is concerned. The whole experience got me thinking about the power of attending networking events.

?

Everyone knows that networking is an essential part of professional success. After all, it’s not just about who you know; it’s about how well they know you. Networking events are the perfect platform to make yourself known and build meaningful relationships with people in your industry. Here are a few tips on leveraging networking events for professional growth.

?

Be Prepared to Talk About Yourself:

?

One of the key components of any successful networking event is having a prepared “elevator pitch”—a brief statement that quickly summarizes who you are and what you do. This should include both your current role and a few accomplishments that demonstrate why they should be interested in talking to you further. Make sure to practice your pitch beforehand so that it sounds natural when you deliver it in person.

?

Be Open to Conversation:

?

Don’t be shy about introducing yourself to people at the event or engaging in conversation with those around you. It can seem intimidating but remember that everyone there is looking for the same thing—to build relationships and grow their network. Asking questions during conversations is also an effective way of showing genuine interest in someone else’s work and establishing rapport with them.

?

Follow Up Afterward:

?

Once the event has come to an end, don’t forget to follow up with everyone whether they made a lasting impression on you or not. You never know what dynamic could change for yourself or your new contact that could bring new light to potential growth in the relationship. Whether it be through email or a direct message on LinkedIn, take advantage of this opportunity to stay connected after the event has ended and nurture those relationships over time—you never know where these connections may lead!

?

After getting home my task for the evening was to text or email each and every contact letting them know how I enjoyed meeting them including a link to my digital business card and ending with a note letting them know to add me to their contacts. At that point I’ve already added them to my contacts, so if they reach out to me it’s not from an unknown number. The key ingredient here is to periodically stay in touch letting them know if you could be of help to please reach out. That’s something you can possibly do on a routine basis scheduling a follow up in your calendar or electronic device reminders.

?

Conclusion:?

?

Networking events can be an invaluable resource for professionals looking to expand their circles and get ahead in their careers. By taking these tips into account, attending such events can become a powerful tool for personal growth and development—so don’t miss out on this opportunity! With proper preparation, openness, and follow-up afterward, these events can help open many doors for long-term career success!
