Leveraging Midjourney: Safely Unleashing the Power of Generative AI in Your Creative Process

Greetings to all the innovators, marketing mavericks, and brand visionaries! Fasten your seatbelts as we venture into the fascinating world of generative AI, focusing on Midjourney.

If you are unfamiliar with Midjourney, I'm partly envious (I'd love to join your tranquility under that blissful rock) and partially concerned (AI is the buzz of the town, you had better step out into the sunlight).

Let's shed some light for those in the dark (no judgement here) : Midjourney, born out of a San Francisco-based independent research lab, is a generative AI platform. It fabricates images from textual prompts, akin to OpenAI's DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. In the landscape of AI art, Midjourney stands as a trailblazer with the capacity to revolutionize your team's creative process. The potential applications are endless but heres a few:

  • Advertising and Marketing: Midjourney can synthesize customized visuals for ad campaigns. From social media posts, digital ads, to unique posters, brainstorming sessions can have an added dimension of rapid prototyping.
  • Visual Design: For visual designers, Midjourney serves as a tool for swift concept visualization, saving precious time otherwise spent on manual creation. The platform can also foster unique artwork and design elements.
  • Film and Animation: This AI can swiftly generate an array of visuals for characters, settings, and props from written descriptions, enriching storyboards and scene compositions.

Your only limitation(s) with Midjourney is your imagination.... and a lot of prompt crafting.

It all begins with a simple prompt "/imagine"

"Sounds risky?" you may ask. You're not wrong - no technology is without risks. Midjourney presents specific challenges and variables to consider, particularly for brand governance. However, a pilot program (cue Heavenly Angel sound effect) is a safeguard - a minor investment to explore potential challenges, risks, and opportunities in a controlled setup to allow you to safely blaze your own trail. Planned correctly, by the end of the pilot, you should have a clear understanding of:

  • Time/Money: Efficiency gains and platform costs
  • Challenges: Resources, scalability, operational enablement
  • Opportunities: Areas of high utilization and potential benefits
  • Competitive analysis: How does Midjourney stack against other platforms?
  • The path to full-scale rollout: Green or Red light?

How might you achieve this?, Well here are some tips;

Step 1: Grasp Midjourney's Potential

Immerse yourself in understanding Midjourney's capabilities. This will enable you to discern possible use-cases and potential pilot participants. Your pilot should balance creative exploration and objective measurement. Identify real-world projects where Midjourney can serve as a creative aid.

Step 2: Define Your Pilot's Blueprint

Outline your pilot's scope, set clear targets, and establish measurable KPIs. Compose a diverse pilot team equipped with a range of skills and experiences across visual design, animation, video, and marketing. Your goals will determine whether Midjourney is suitable for a full-scale rollout by considering its constraints, cost implications, scalability requirements, and brand effects.

Step 3: Smooth Onboarding and Enablement

After selecting your team and projects, embark on a seamless onboarding journey. Ensure the transition is as smooth as possible by setting up a private Discord Server for easy communication, offering guidance on prompt engineering and Discord basics, and lastly create an internal prompt library.

Internal prompt libraries can serve as the gold standard of what "great" looks like for your company. Ensure to include your brand values, colors and voice as this can go a long way towards brand governance.

Scaled Enablement (Multi-region / discipline) is a whole series of posts in itself, If you are lucky enough to have someone who heads up enablement, lean in.

Step 4: Implement Your Pilot

Once all preparations are complete, let the pilot take flight! Urge your team to employ Midjourney across varied tasks, gather feedback regularly, and fine-tune the process to ensure success.

Step 5: Evaluate and Iterate

Post-pilot, gather all data, scrutinize the results, and cross-check with your set KPIs. Was Midjourney up to par? Did it elevate creativity and efficiency? Did your team enjoy using it? Your answers will inform whether Midjourney becomes a part of your standard workflow.

Remember, Midjourney is a tool to augment your team's capabilities, acting as a co-pilot, steering you towards uncharted creative territories, but your ship still needs a captain.

If it all works out for you, its another platform to add to your creative tooling portfolio, now you are into the realm of platform management and scaling, which is also its own set of posts.
