Joining the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference, the American Bar Association (ABA) will showcase how lawyers and bar associations wield influence addressing today's environmental crises. As an ABA delegate at #COP28, I'm excited to contribute legal insights on panels on climate governance, net-zero lawyering, and policies to realize the Paris Agreement. By convening attorneys worldwide, the ABA promotes urgent #climateaction through legal capacity building between nations and societies, legislative/regulatory developments, and counsel equipping businesses, lawmakers and citizens to transition sustainably. During COP28, don't miss ABA President Mary Smith 's remarks along with 100,000 attendees to drive progress on carbon emissions, renewable energy, decarbonization, climate justice, and beyond!
The American Bar Association will co-host ─ with the International Bar Association, Brazilian Bar Association and Law Society of England and Wales ─ panel discussions during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) Nov. 30 to Dec. 12 in Expo City Dubai.
Joining me as a part of the ABA delegation are Achinthi Vithanage, Renee Dopplick, John Dernbach, Tracy Hester, and Amy Edwards. Special thanks to the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice, ABA Section of Energy, Environment, and Resources, American Bar Association.

December 6, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. GST
IUCN Pavilion @COP28
Join us for a discussion on the role of lawyers and organizations with the legal mandate in tackling the climate crisis and supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Learn from representatives at the International Bar Association, Brazilian Bar Association and Law Society of England and Wales, Net Zero Lawyers Alliance and the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law about initiatives promoting knowledge generation and support for implementation of climate actions, capacity buildling across nations and in domestic settings, legal information sharing and transfer, and NDC realization through the Paris Agreement-aligned advice and legislation.
Our case is simple: climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the just transition to a climate positive development pathway, require engagement of lawyers and development and enforcement of adequate and enabling legal systems. Speakers at this event will share practical examples of knowledge generation, legal information sharing, capacity building, as well as legal advice on public and private law matters to adequately tackle the triple planetary crisis by demonstrating how lawyers can deploy climate and biodiversity postive solutions that align with the Paris Agreement and Country NDCs.
