Leveraging Google Maps to Job Search
Just something quick today
Google Maps is an amazing tool, not only can you find directions to places you want to go. You can also use it to find jobs that are advertised directly on employers Websites for your work sector.
Whilst this method isn't meant to be directly for job searching, it helped me find a few companies whilst I was carrying out my own search. This method can be used by both job searchers and recruiters. This is how I knew the names of a lot of companies and applied directly because the written description was the same that recruiters were using.
By default when you run a search on Google Maps, it only displays results within a certain radius (20 miles I think), in order to display a larger radius, you need to zoom out on the map
Here's the full procedure I used to do in full
- Search my Home town, or a location
- Right click on the map... select "search this area", and then zoom out
- Type my queries into Google maps (e.g Warehouse Jobs, HSE Careers, etc) and search
- When results are found, employers will be displayed in Red/Grey/Blue Markers
- If no results are displayed, try clicking somewhere else on the map and search again.
- Click on the employer (making sure it didn't say Job Centre/Recruiter)
- Visit their Website through the links on the Map
- Look around their Website for references to jobs
- Rinse and repeat
- Hint, most job/careers information are normally in page footer or "Contact us"
When results are displayed, make sure it doesn't say "Recruiter", or "Job Centre". Otherwise generally these are just sites with jobs readvertised. This method is what I used to find direct employer listings when running my searches.
A couple of notes about this procedure
- This doesn't replace job sites, or specific sites. It's meant to be an additional tool to help
- It can be buggy sometimes, which is why you have to make sure map is in correct area
- Experiment with search terms / keywords, it's amazing the results you find
- You will find employers listing jobs throughout the country, so if you know people looking you can help refer them as they may not know of the roles
- Don't search into your specific sectors. I've found jobs completely unrelated to my knowledge sector, but relevant to my skill set
Experiment with the multipliers to find more and more results
Example "Warehouse Vacancies", "Warehouse Careers", "Warehouse recruitment", etc. These can all generate different results

- Careers
- Jobs
- Vacancies

7 个月I must be using a different Google Maps. I'm mystified how you found any jobs listed this way at all as my many searches only returned businesses, staffing/recruiting agencies, and reviews. Boston, for example, is a big jobs hub but the app returned 0 results. Am I missing a step somewhere..? Or maybe this only works in the UK?

3 年Andrew - this really is excellent - and something that could make all the difference to someone looking for work. Also bear in mind that at least 80% of vacancies are never advertised, so if you work in a specialist field it may also be a good way of identifying potential companies for a direct approach.
