Leveraging Agentive AI for Web Accessibility: A New Frontier in Inclusive Design

In our increasingly digital world, ensuring that every user can access and navigate online content is not just a regulatory obligation—it’s a moral imperative. As we push for more inclusive technology, I’ve been exploring an ambitious project idea: creating a team of AI agents that embody the real-life experiences of users with disabilities. Imagine AI not as a set of rigid testing tools, but as dynamic “users” who live the web experience, flagging issues and sharing feedback as authentically as a human would. This project draws inspiration from the rich narratives in the W3C’s “Stories of Web Users” and aims to redefine how we approach accessibility testing.


The Concept: AI Agents as Virtual Users

Traditional accessibility testing often relies on static libraries and predetermined checklists. While these methods are essential, they can fall short of capturing the nuanced experiences of people with disabilities. The idea here is to build agentive AI systems that simulate real user interactions. Each agent is designed to embody a specific user persona, complete with unique sensory, cognitive, and motor characteristics. By doing so, these agents don’t just flag missing alt text or insufficient color contrast—they “experience” the web in ways that mirror the challenges and frustrations of actual users.


Meet the Personas

Drawing on the W3C’s user stories, our hypothetical project envisions agents representing a spectrum of abilities and challenges. For example:


  • Ade – The Reporter with Limited Arm Use: Ade navigates the web using only a keyboard due to a spinal cord injury. His agent would simulate challenges such as delayed focus, difficulty in accessing interactive elements, and reliance on keyboard shortcuts. Ade’s narrative might include feedback like, “I struggled to reach the navigation menu using only the keyboard, and some interactive elements were hard to focus.”
  • Ian – The Data Entry Clerk with Autism: Ian finds unpredictable layouts and auto-playing videos disorienting. His agent would simulate an environment where dynamic content disrupts the user experience. Imagine feedback like, “The constantly shifting content and unexpected pop-ups made it hard for me to understand what was most important.”
  • Lakshmi – The Senior Accountant Who Is Blind: Lakshmi relies on a screen reader to interact with digital content. Her agent would focus on ensuring that the website’s structure, alt texts, and ARIA labels are well-implemented. Her report might state, “Without proper labeling or structured navigation, I couldn’t efficiently interpret the page.”
  • Lexie – The Online Shopper with Color Blindness: Lexie’s agent would simulate a visual experience where hues such as red, green, orange, and brown are indistinguishable. This might lead to feedback such as, “The use of similar color hues for different actions made it hard to tell what was clickable versus decorative.”


Other personas—like Sophie, who has Down syndrome; Dhruv, who is deaf; Marta, who is deaf and blind; Stefan, who grapples with ADHD and dyslexia; and Elias, who faces low vision and motor challenges—further enrich this system by addressing a broad array of accessibility hurdles. Each agent would generate narrative feedback reflective of their unique perspective, providing insights far beyond traditional checklists.


Multi-Modal Perception and Adaptive Reasoning

A key feature of this project is its multi-modal approach. Rather than processing a website solely as text or code, each agent would “see” and “hear” the site:


  • Visual Simulation: For agents like Lakshmi and Elias, visual inputs would be processed with adjustments simulating low vision or the need for screen magnification. For Lexie, visual data would be altered to mimic color blindness.
  • Auditory and Textual Processing: For agents such as Dhruv and Marta, any audio content would be converted into text in real time. This ensures that the absence or inaccuracy of captions and transcripts is effectively detected.
  • Cognitive Processing: Agents representing users like Ian, Sophie, and Stefan would simulate processing challenges by “interpreting” content in a way that reflects cognitive load and potential overload, providing valuable feedback on content clarity and layout consistency.


By integrating these sensory modalities, the AI agents can generate a rich tapestry of feedback that mirrors the actual user experience—not just flagging technical errors, but also highlighting emotional and cognitive roadblocks.


Reinforcement Learning for Authentic Interaction

To ensure that these agents truly “live” the web experience, the system would employ reinforcement learning (RL). This means that rather than following a scripted set of actions, each agent learns and adapts over time. For example, Ade’s agent might discover more efficient keyboard navigation strategies, while Ian’s agent learns to anticipate and flag disruptive dynamic content.


Such learning isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about authenticity. The agents adjust their behaviors to better simulate the actual experiences of users with disabilities, leading to insights that are both deep and actionable.


A Collaborative Multi-Agent Ecosystem

No single perspective can capture the full spectrum of accessibility challenges. That’s why this project envisions a collaborative ecosystem where multiple agents operate concurrently. A central controller would orchestrate tasks across the different personas, allowing them to explore the same web environment from various angles. When multiple agents highlight the same issue—say, poor color contrast noted by both Lexie and Elias—it signals a high-priority problem that needs immediate attention. Meanwhile, unique challenges, such as Ian’s discomfort with unexpected content shifts, are documented as specific, actionable insights.


Ethical and Feasibility Considerations

While the vision for this project is exciting, it also raises important questions about feasibility and ethics. Can AI truly replicate the lived experiences of people with disabilities? How do we ensure that these simulations are respectful and accurate without oversimplifying or stereotyping real challenges? Moreover, as we push the boundaries of automation in accessibility testing, how do we balance technological innovation with the need for human oversight and empathy?

This is a fascinating idea with huge potential upside and feels to me like the embodiment of what we need and want AI to do for us. Manually testing for the broad spectrum of user experiences is untenable for almost all businesses, but that doesn't make the issues users face insignificant, nor does it make them magically disappear. Leveraging technology to automate a task that is too big too tackle through human effort and too important to ignore is a perfect use case. I hope you continue to explore this idea.
