?? Project Management debate: How to integrate Scrum?

By: Ajo Koshy Joseph

?? One of the hottest debates in Project Management circles around the integration of Scrum. The noise primarily stems from a few key reasons:

  1. Perspectives on the Scrum Guide: The Scrum Guide, a concise 14-page document, clearly outlines how the Scrum framework should be applied. However, various "interpretations" and "extras" often get added, driven by varying understandings or a desire for flexibility by self-proclaimed Scrum experts. ??
  2. Learn First, Preach Later: Scrum isn't something you can grasp in a single session. It's a dynamic, evolving framework. Yet, the common tendency is to attend a Scrum session, skim internet notes, and instantly become a Scrum preacher without a deep understanding. ??
  3. Certifications Matter: While not a certification enthusiast, certifications do signify time invested in learning. Whether or not you're a fan, diving into Scrum and earning certifications is a valuable approach to showcase your commitment. ??
  4. Navigating Scrum Variations: There's no such thing as half-baked Scrum. However, organizations often blend Scrum with existing practices, creating hybrids like Waterfall + Scrum or Kanban + Scrum. While transitions are acceptable, it's crucial that such combinations aren't merely for staying in one's comfort zones. ??
  5. Advice vs. Practice: The essence of Scrum lies in implementation. Many talk about its benefits but fall short when it comes to putting it into practice. Various factors contribute to this gap, from resistance to change to contractual obligations, hindering the true application of Scrum principles. ?? ??Have you ever heard that the 'Scrum Guide is intentionally made incomplete'? It only covers the essentials needed for implementation. The true power of Scrum lies in the collective intelligence of those using it. Instead of rigid instructions, Scrum rules guide relationships and interactions, fostering continuous improvement. ??

5 Ways to Manage Risk and Maximize Rewards

By: Project Management Institute

Everyone manages risk. Looking both ways before crossing the street, strapping on the seatbelt before turning the ignition. On projects, risk gets more complicated. There are unmarked roads, potential trouble lurking around every curve. The consequences of being surprised and unprepared can be very costly. That’s why risk management is fundamental to the success of every project — and project manager.

Risk management is a team sport. It starts with the project manager, but to succeed it requires active participation from team members, stakeholders, sponsors, partners and customers. It must be supported by the organization with clear processes, tools and resources. And it benefits enormously from a culture that encourages honest, ongoing communication about risks. In doing so, "bad" risks can be mitigated sooner — and "good" ones, bringing opportunities, can be maximized for greater rewards.

Here are some field-tested, expert-vetted practices and insights to strengthen your risk management approach.

  1. Start a Conversation, Keep It Going
  2. Remember Risks Are Opportunities, Too
  3. Build a Realistic Risk Budget into Your Plan
  4. Reassess Risk Throughout the Project
  5. Conduct a Risk Review, Learn and Share
