Level Up Your Game: Practical Techniques to Improve UX

As a game designer, I’m passionate about crafting worlds that not only captivate players but also provide a seamless and enjoyable experience. However, in the heat of creating epic narratives and stunning visuals, it’s easy to overlook the critical element that binds it all together: user experience (UX).

In this article, I will be covering the non-art related stuff, some key techniques for improving the UX of your game which I have learnt from my experience in the gaming industry.

  • Play-Testing: Play-testing sessions are your secret weapon for crafting an epic game experience! They're crucial moments where you get to observe actual players interact with your game. Conduct play testing sessions with different age groups, watch how players interact with the game, note their reactions, and listen to their feedback.

Tips for effective play-testing with different age groups:

  1. Aim for a representative sample of your target audience in terms of age, gender, and gaming experience.
  2. Adjust the setting, language, and instructions to suit the specific age group.
  3. Watch how players interact with the game, note their reactions, and listen to their feedback.
  4. Encourage players to share their thoughts, feelings, and suggestions without leading them towards specific answers.

  • Usability Testing & Prioritise Clarity: Once you are done with play testing sessions, create user personas and make necessary changes and improvements. Remember, your game interface must be a roadmap not a puzzle. Avoid unnecessary complexity and keep interactions streamlined.

  • A/B Testing: After completing above two steps, come up with the improved solutions. Make two, three variants for the particular problem you are addressing and test them accordingly. Data is your best friend, rely on quantitative analysis.

Conclusion:

Hence, it's a continuous loop of observing, analysing and iterating. These techniques will surely answer your both art and non-art side of the game. Embrace the feedback, prioritise issues, and refine your game. Actively seek feedback from players through beta tests, surveys, and online communities. Be open to criticism and iterate on your design based on their insights. Remember, a game is never truly finished; it's a living ecosystem that thrives on constant improvement. Good UX improves player engagement, satisfaction, and overall game success. Let's make UX the cornerstone of game development, and together we can build worlds where players never want to leave.
