Level Up: Are You a Pro or an Amateur?

"The difference between a pro and an amateur is not talent; it’s dedication." – Anonymous
"The pros make it happen, the amateurs let it happen." – Grant Cardone

Since I was little, my uncle, who has been in football his whole life, has inspired me.

I watched him play and later coach the national U15, U17 and U21 teams, and a couple of years ago, the Estonian National team / Estonian Football Association . He then moved on to coach Paide Linnameeskond, leading them to nearly qualify for the UEFA Europa League —the farthest any club in Estonian football history has gone so far.

He is a true professional when it comes to coaching (if you want to know who my uncle is — DM me). My weightlifting coach is also a pro, with a max squat of 400 kg and a clean & jerk of 253 kg. Crazy, I know!

But when I look back on my youth — through football, competitive ballroom dancing, basketball, Olympic weightlifting, and entrepreneurship — I see that I have always been super competitive, a maximalist, and obsessed.

Like a cucaracha, I never give up. I have realized that it's all a game.

But how you play the game is what makes the difference.

You ready? Let's roll.

Word "Professional" etymology

The word "professional" has its roots in the Latin word "professio," which means "public declaration" or "a profession." Here's a breakdown of its etymology:

  • Latin "professio": This term is derived from "profitere," which means "to declare publicly" or "to profess." "Pro" means "before" or "in front of," and "fiteri" means "to admit" or "to confess."
  • Old French "profession": The term was adopted into Old French as "profession," referring to a vocation or occupation, particularly one that requires specialized training.
  • Middle English: The word then made its way into Middle English in the 14th century as "profession," retaining the meaning related to a particular vocation or occupation.
  • Modern Usage: Over time, "professional" evolved to describe someone who engages in a specific occupation for a livelihood, especially one that requires formal training, education, and skill.

Thus, "professional" has evolved to denote not just the act of professing or declaring, but also the status of being skilled and trained in a specific field or occupation.

As the legendary coach Tim Grover , who coached both Michael and Kobe, said, "Kobe worked harder, but Michael worked smarter." (He said that in this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGHnf1pWSjk)

What’s your opinion, though?

Kobe Bryant

Known for "Mamba Mentality".

Kobe Bryant was a true professional, not an amateur, for several reasons:

  • Relentless Work Ethic: He was famous for his relentless work ethic. He would often practice long hours, arrive early, and stay late to perfect his skills. While others did 2 workouts a day, he did 3-4, which gave him a competitive edge. Sometimes, he would listen to horror music just to get "in the zone" and enhance his "killer instincts." He was obsessed with becoming the best, the greatest.
  • Mamba Mentality: He embraced a mindset of continuous improvement, always striving to be better, which reflects the professionalism expected at the highest levels of sports.
  • Leadership: Kobe inspired and pushed his teammates to excel, fostering a culture of excellence within his teams, which is a key trait of professional athletes.
  • Consistent Performance: Throughout his 20-year career, he achieved remarkable accolades, including five NBA championships, underscoring his skill and professionalism.

His dedication to improvement is legendary, and he pushed himself and his teammates to strive for excellence and relentless pursuit of greatness and his "no days off" mentality have made him a symbol of hard work in basketball.

Rest in peace, Kobe.

Did you know...Kobe was not only a phenomenal basketball player but also an accomplished storyteller. In 2018, he won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his project

As a long-time partner of Kobe, 耐克 has embraced the Mamba Mentality in its marketing campaigns and products. The Kobe line of sneakers is designed with performance and excellence in mind, reflecting his philosophy.
