Level 1 Transformation: Diversity, Quality and Professional Advancement

NPM Geomatics is excited and very proud to have once again achieved a Level 1 BBBEE scorecard. Long before President Thabo Mbeki first introduced the concept of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in 2002, NPM Geomatics had already begun its transformation. The appointment of the late Mncedisi Nzelenzele, previously the Surveyor General of the Transkei, as a director in 1998, marked the start of NPM Geomatics’ journey towards transformation.

Since 1998, we have continued to take transformation, and the development of historically disadvantaged people, very seriously. It has become part of our culture and focus. As a result, we are the only Geomatics, or Land Surveying, company in the Eastern Cape which represents the true spirit and letter of the law in this regard. We have embraced transformation as a worthy goal, not simply a box to be ticked. We count ourselves fortunate to be a diverse and fully transformed company where each person is able to play fully to their strengths.

NPM Geomatics is required to be evaluated on all elements of the Built Environment Scorecard. We are very fortunate to have 2 young female directors of colour. This certainly helps our score. But, Bongi and Kayleen do not only tick a number of boxes on the scorecard, they each shoulder significant responsibility for both operational delivery and company leadership. The role they play in the company extends into HR Management, Professional Development and Strategic Planning, above and beyond the value they add as Professional Land Surveyors.

?In addition to ownership and management control, NPM has always had a strong focus on training and staff development. We have become one of the most sought-after companies in which graduate survey technicians hope to do their training. And this is not us blowing our own horn – this is what we hear time and again from our colleagues in the education sector. We believe that the development of young technicians and professionals has an impact that reaches far beyond our circle of influence. Our commitment to improving the lives of others goes beyond our own team. We regularly offer Enterprise Development opportunities to selected service providers and discounted fees to community or charitable organisations working in the Education, NPO or CBO sectors. As a professional company, we recognise the responsibility that comes with the blessings and opportunities we have been afforded.

?Lastly, by being mindful in our identification and selection of appropriate, quality, service providers, NPM Geomatics has transformed its procurement strategy. Wherever feasible, we look to support smaller suppliers and suppliers who are also BBBEE compliant. In this manner, we are building the regional economy from the grassroots. As a result, NPM Geomatics consistently scores well in this category.

?Yes, the BBBEE requirements can feel onerous. However, at NPM Geomatics we recognise the value that there is in opening up opportunities for diversity in our company. This is one of our core values and we remain committed to building upon this strength.?
