Letting Go of the Past to Create a Brilliant New Future

When you think of the past, what kind of feelings flow into your mind? What kind of images show up on your internal mental screen? Right here, right now, how much do you feel you’re influenced by your past?

And why would that be important?

When you consider the way that painful experiences cast a long and lingering shadow over our lives, it’s easy to understand how the past can easily dominate our thoughts and feelings and behaviour.

It’s obvious that the past survives in our emotional reactions and continues to inform our behaviours and judgements in the present. Yet, many of our limiting beliefs can be traced to emotional events that took place long ago in our early childhoods. Those emotional and often painful experiences created the framework for everything we believe to be possible in our lives.

Do you think it’s fair that we’re often described as the product of our past, shaped by our experiences and moulded by our emotional memories? The research strongly confirms that this is the case.

The problem lies in the fact that the emotional framework that shapes our feelings is not always obvious. It remains out of sight below the surface of our conscious minds, invisible yet completely capable of exerting a very powerful influence on our thoughts and feelings, beliefs and attitudes.

So, how can we make changes to a system that we’re not even aware of?

Let’s start by accepting that the past is only perceived via the distorting lens of our emotions. Most memories, whilst possibly vivid and charged with emotional energy, are not an accurate recollection of the past. That might seem like a very strange statement but the research confirms this disturbing insight into the reliability of human memory.

And once you appreciate that your absolutely perfect recollections are not necessarily accurate, you might also appreciate that your memory is not an infallible and totally reliable way to deal with and interpret past events.

Our emotions colour our experience of the past until the original events become distorted, blurred and unrecognisable. These distortions are easily pressed into service to confirm and support our individual interpretation of the world.

Our challenge, therefore, is to learn to let go of the past. We need to free ourselves from this web of stories of what did or did not happen. It is only by letting go of the past and its conditioning that we can free ourselves to choose a future that truly fulfils our dreams and potential.

The process begins the moment that you question your recollections of the past.

The path to personal freedom is based on your willingness to let go of your emotional attachment to the negative events of your past.

As you detach yourself from your old habits and feelings, you create space for a new and more positive set of behaviours.

As they arise, your feelings might seem to be immediate and an integral part of your personality. But it’s entirely possible to learn to pause before you react. To take a deeper breath and question where your feelings are coming from. To create a moment in which you can decide whether you wish to experience the emotion. Or not. To create a moment in which you can decide to feel exactly the way you want to feel.

This is a moment of revelation and the beginning of a profound process of inner discovery and transformation. You no longer react automatically. You begin to consider how you feel and how you want to feel. You understand that you really can exercise far greater control over your vast emotional resources than you ever thought possible. You can channel and direct this power for your benefit, for your health, for your wellbeing, for your success. And the positive shift in your emotional reactions will have a positive effect on the people around you too.

This is when you can break free of your limiting beliefs and behaviours. It is a truly remarkable pathway to personal success, happiness, fulfilment and empowerment.
