Letting Go of a Painful Past

Perhaps all of us have some emotional pain from our past or present that can haunt us. It may be present in our hearts, regardless of what other things we are doing or feeling, that hurt is still there. – How can we be released from this misery and rise above it?
I was a doting father. I spent many hours every week doing things with my 3 kids. I never had to discipline them sharply because we got along so well. I was the best father to them that I can possibly be. -- But two of them want nothing to do with me. And I have grandchildren I may never see. I miss them, and it burdens me with heartbreak.
I have been praying and hoping and attempting to reconcile with them for 10 years, but in vain. Now, I am ready to accept their decisions and to move on. I just do not know how. – I am trying to exchange sad thoughts with good ones. Each day, I wake up and begin listing the things for which I am grateful and blessed. And I read God’s Word everyday to remind me that he forgives my mistakes and loves me dearly.
One thing I am thankful for is the love of my oldest son, Saxon. He is an artist who travels the world seeking inspiration. We are sympatico. We enjoy each other’s presence thoroughly. -- I also appreciate my ‘calling” and knowing what my talents are and using them for the benefit of others.?-- And I am thankful for the loving companionship of my wife, and the few friends I meet with regularly. -- Keeping my mind on those good things helps!
