Letter to My Younger Self

Letter to My Younger Self

Dear Karen,

On days like today, I think of you a lot - or should I say - me? After all, we are the same person but only at different stages of our life and careers. Looking back, what would I have written to you if I could? What would I have advised or encouraged you of?

Unfortunately, experience cannot be taught - you must go through most of it yourself.

Starting this letter is difficult since I do not want to make you believe everything is rosy. It is not! The road to where I am today has been stony, steep, and full of obstacles but filled with great support and wise mentors.

Speaking up is always necessary, but it is crucial to do it on a day like this. And today, the world is actively listening. So, let’s honour the women before us (generations of great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters and aunts) that started this struggle - for us and the next generations of women.

International Women’s Day is not just another day to celebrate but a day to always remember where you are coming from. Never forget the struggle you faced to establish yourself. Pushing a career in a male-dominated industry has been a struggle, but it also sets an excellent example for others. There used to be fewer female role models in the business - so Karen - start to be one yourself. And - if I can give you one piece of advice - start networking earlier. Building a solid and robust network is critical to getting support and guidance. Ask for help and look for a good, supportive mentor who mirrors some of your excellent capabilities and your blind spots. Feedback is a gift - use it. And be courageous enough to give feedback. You can only grow if you are aware of the effect and influence you have on people.

Networking or mentoring takes up precious time you might not feel is worth spending. Don‘t cut corners here - the time spent with others is well invested. Give more than you take - and it will return to you positively!

Be yourself. Be authentic. Be empathic. And be aware that being courageous is acting in a simple & most effective way. Do not pretend you are someone else or play a role. If you want to lead people, liking people is the basis - otherwise, get out of leadership! Being everyone’s darling all the time will not be possible. No matter how hard you try, some people will not like your actions - no matter how professional, friendly and cool you are. It does not mean disregarding these people.

Looking back, please do not worry too much. There are many cool women out there to network with, to support by coaching or have as a mentor and exchange ideas with. But remember - there are also cool men who see diversity as a gift rather than a hurdle. Find them and make them your allies.

Professional and personal happiness and fulfilment will drive you. Having had the courage and confidence to start the path as you and I did will also guide the next generation. Think of all the great women who struggled before you and are happy to share their experiences so the next generation does not have to fall into the same traps!

Last, treat everyone with decency, respect and kindness - regardless of who they are and where they come from.

You will make a difference in your environment and, with your strong values, stay on your path. Good luck, and happy International Women’s Day!

Karen
