Dear younger self,
As I sit here, a thriving creative in my mid-30s, I can't help but smile thinking about you—that passionate, slightly uncertain, and incredibly determined young woman. You're standing at the threshold of adulthood, eyeing the world of creativity with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Let me tell you something: you're killing it, girl, even if you don't realize it yet. I know you’re worried about choosing a "non-traditional" major. You’re concerned that your passion for art, media and advocacy? might not lead to a "real" career. Stop that thinking right now. Your creativity and unique perspective isn't just valid; it's your superpower. Those late nights spent writing, brainstorming ideas - They're laying the foundation for an incredible career.
Remember when your high school counselor suggested that perhaps a more "practical" degree might be better? I wish I could go back in time and tell her how wrong she was. You not only graduated with honors but also went on to earn accreditations and certifications and create places for other black creatives like yourself. You’ve not only succeeded but thrive, building a career that allows you to express your creativity while making an impact. Your work resonates with people, inspires change, and brings new perspectives to light. So, keep pushing back against those who underestimate the value of your chosen path—your determination is your greatest asset.
I know you struggle with self-doubt. You often feel like your voice isn’t important enough, like you’re somehow not qualified to create or share your work. Let me assure you: your perspective matters. Your ideas are valuable, your creativity is needed, and your voice deserves to be heard. In the years to come, you’ll not only excel in your field but also become a mentor to young creatives following in your footsteps.
There will be challenges, of course. You’ll face criticism and people who might not understand or appreciate your work. But here’s the thing: you’ll learn to articulate your vision with clarity and conviction. You’ll find your voice and use it not just in your work but in broader communities as well. That project you’ll start to support and empower other young creatives? It will change lives.
I want you to know that it’s okay to make mistakes. That risky project you’ll take on- It’s not a setback; it’s a learning opportunity. You’ll grow more from that experience than from any easy success. Embrace criticism as a tool for improvement, not as a personal attack.
Also, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Your worth isn’t measured solely by your creative achievements or professional milestones. Take time to nurture friendships, explore new hobbies, and simply rest. Balance isn’t just a buzzword; it’s crucial for a fulfilling life.
Lastly, always remember this: you are not alone. The creative field is evolving, and you’re part of that evolution. Seek out other creatives, build networks, and lift each other up. Your journey will inspire countless others to pursue their passions and bring fresh ideas into the world.
So, my dear younger self, keep creating, keep questioning, and keep pushing the boundaries of your imagination. You’re already killing it, even if the world hasn’t realized it yet. Trust in yourself and your abilities. The future is bright, and you’re going to help shape it into a more vibrant one for all.
