Letter to My Homeland from a Black US Expat

This "Us vs. Them" Narrative is Terrifying

If you want to fight, fight—but not each other. This cycle of division is embarrassing at best and deadly at worst. And from where I stand, watching from across the ocean, I see how dangerous it’s becoming.

Don’t let the noise convince you to:

  • Hate the neighbor who shoveled your driveway last winter.
  • Stop saying hello to the old lady who loves your baby.
  • Wish harm upon the guy who was in your third-grade class.

I refuse to let a manufactured narrative tell me who I can or cannot love.

One thing I’ve come to recognize as a Black expat is this: My genuine Black self will always find her people. They will be from different countries, different life experiences, and different shades of skin. I resist the forces that try to keep me from my friends, including: bots, politicians & billionaires.

In the name of Black History Month, I resist.
