Letter of Heart - February 2023

February has been a time of renewal, found in a place where some of my most special memories and experiences reside—Grayton Beach.

Grayton is an eclectic beach town set along a scenic 19-mile stretch of coastal, two-lane highway 30A. Beach towns, new developments and planned communities are nestled along the road, offering families and visitors of all ages a personalized recreational playlist from live music, farmer’s markets and crawfish boils to sophisticated dining, art galleries, shopping and wellness spas. But, it is the pure beauty of the gulf waters offset by snow-white sand dunes and endless beaches that draw people from around the country and, increasingly, the world.

30A is magical, but Grayton Beach stands apart. Older cottages and larger, newer homes built to house generational broods intermingle with hidden coffee shops and small galleries perched behind hundred-year-old live-oak trees. It’s also home to one of the best attractions for live music, great food and a New Orleans-inspired vibe—Red Bar! A brilliant mix of old Florida charm and eclecticism.

My parents stumbled across the area more than 20 years ago while attending a wedding. Since then, this has become the destination for our family vacations. Our first in the early 2000s when there were just eight of us, expanding to our most recent reunion last June of 34—my parents, siblings, their spouses and 21 offspring. A gift to gather together and experience the younger set forming their own bonds to this community.

I rented a cottage a block and a half from the beach. I welcomed family and friends here and made new connections and friendships that will endure. Grayton has captured more of my heart.

Stepping out of my comfort zone to travel alone and work here was the best decision I could have made. I am returning to Chicago recharged, renewed and excited about what lies ahead.

Taking a road less traveled made all the difference. I highly recommend it.
