A Letter From Our Editor-in-Chief
Man of Many
Australia's Largest Men's Lifestyle Site featuring the latest in Products, Culture & Style. ?? https://manofmany.com
I know I generally use these monthly updates to spruik my travel plans and regale you all with tales of my unremarkable misadventures, but allow me to get serious for a moment. If you weren’t already aware, Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has confirmed that it won’t be renewing the deals it made with Australian news publishers (not Man of Many) a few years ago. Those agreements were made following the introduction of the News Media Bargaining Code (NMBC), a law that forced tech companies to pay to host news content on their platforms.
At the time, we made no secret our position on the NMBC and the deals that were signed with news outlets; after all, we’ve always prioritised supporting independent publishers, but the saga continues to drag on. Some have suggested that the government could attempt to force Meta’s hand, but the tech company would simply turn around and block news publishers from posting on Facebook and Instagram. It’s already happened in Canada.?
That would be dire, not just for the large media companies that stand to lose millions, but for smaller independents like us. It would mean you wouldn’t be able to tag your friends in our daily Instagram videos, view our latest stories on Facebook or engage in our weekly video series on social. These are important touch points for us to connect with you; our audience and the very reason why we do this in the first place.?
It’s not just us either; it’s also our friends at We Are Explorers, The Daily Aus, Concrete Playground and hundreds more amazing organisations. Independent publishers provide a unique voice in a cluttered media landscape, bringing important stories that may otherwise have gone unreported into the public eye.
If you haven't already, please consider subscribing to our daily newsletter. But don't worry—there are also many other ways to get your daily dose of Man of Many, which we've detailed below.
So, what can you do to help??
