Letter from a Birmingham Jail
SGR’s 10 in 10 Note – January 22, 2025
Every year, SGR commemorates the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. with his “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”?As was often the case with Dr. King, his words were profound. Sixty-two years after he authored this historic letter and 57 years after his death, his memory continues to resonate.
Born on January 15, 1929, if Martin Luther King, Jr. had lived, he would have been 96 years old this month. In his last speech, he spoke these words, “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life—longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will.” The speech became known as the “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. He delivered it in Memphis, Tennessee. He was there to support striking sanitation workers. It was April 3, 1968. He was assassinated the next day at the age of 39.
