A Letter to Dad: A Father's Day Tribute

A Letter to Dad: A Father's Day Tribute

Dear Dad,

Today is Father's Day, and as my kids are trying to make it special for me, I felt I should also try and make it special for you. It's taken me years to fully appreciate the profound impact you had on my life. Today, I want to express my love and gratitude to you, even though you are no longer with us.

Our relationship was often a mix of highs and lows, marked by misunderstandings and reconciliations. As a teenager, I was determined to carve out my own path, to be different from you in every way possible. Yet, as I stand here today, I realize just how much I have become like you. And nothing could make me prouder.

You came from humble beginnings, a background that shaped you into the person you were: hardworking, resilient, compassionate, and dedicated. Being one of the first doctors in our family, village, and taluka was no small feat. Your journey was paved with challenges, but your unwavering commitment and integrity never faltered. You were a strict disciplinarian, holding us to high standards, and instilling in us a sense of responsibility and ethics that guide me to this day.

You never said "I love you" in words, but your actions spoke volumes. Every sacrifice you made, every late night you spent working, and every small gesture of care was drenched in love. I see that now, even though my younger self was blind to it. I was too immature to recognize the depth of your affection and the many ways you showed it.

Dad, your life was a testament to the power of hard work and compassion. You touched so many lives, not just as a doctor, but as a human being who genuinely cared for others. I remember your compassion was not limited to family and friends but included even total strangers. I remember how we saved a cat from a sewer and you treated her as your own (you were a great vet too). Your default response was to help without any expectation of reciprocation. I often hear stories from those whose lives you changed, and each one is a reminder of the incredible person you were.

These days, I travel to our native village quite frequently (as you always wished), and I feel so loved and proud when I am introduced or recognized as "Prabhu's son" (your nickname). Out of all the external identities I have, let me tell you, this is my favourite one. In fact, if you were still around, you would possibly like who I have become - I don't react as much (more reflective), more disciplined, respect time, more compassionate. I see so much of you in myself, and I am grateful for that inheritance.

My biggest regret is that I never reciprocated your love in the way I should have. I never told you "I love you" while you were alive. I wish I had the wisdom and maturity back then to express what I feel now. But I hope, wherever you are, you can see and feel my love and gratitude.

Thank you, Dad, for everything. I love you forever. I miss you.

With all my heart,

Milind

An honest tribute to a father by his son. In childhood, we often miss the bigger picture of a situation, which we realise as we mature. Many people don't even realise that later.
