A Letter To Black Men

We know that words have power. The power to heal. The power to destroy. The power to build up. Words have the power to shape the narratives of our lives. One of the ways Black men can help change the narrative of their lives is to use the power of their own words.

Lester Young recently?shared?how he used the power of his own words to transform his life through writing letters to himself during his 22 years in prison. Lester Young is now a Prison Re-Entry Specialist, Author and the founder of the Path 2 Redemption Institute. He stated that he would write letters to himself and then mail the letters back to himself so he could read them. There were times when the letters would arrive back to him at just the right moment when he needed to experience the power of his own words. He spoke about the power of writing the following types of letters to yourself: love letters, self forgiveness, motivational, to your younger self, and to your future self.

Lester Young is an amazing example of a Black man who chose to free and heal himself while he was still in a physical prison. He became free internally before he experienced physical freedom. The simple but powerful act of writing a letter to himself helped him to change the narrative of his life.

Take the time this year to tune out the external world that is feeding you a false narrative about Black men, and tune into the world within you that knows how powerful you really are. Write that love letter to yourself. Write that gratitude letter to yourself. Write that 2022 letter to yourself that will help you turn your dreams into a reality this year.

You may choose to write yourself a monthly letter or just one letter for this year. But write at least one letter to yourself and mail it back to you this year. You may receive it back at just the right moment when you need to remind yourself how powerful you really are.
