Perfect parents do not exist on this side of eternity! How do I know this? There are things that I said I'd never do when raising my children.
I said I wouldn't snap at them. I wouldn't correct out of anger. I would be patient. I had a long things of things I would never do.
Guess what? I did all of them and for a long time, I couldn't explain why I did them.
One day I found the answer and it is called GENES. You see, those pesky genes are so strong that they make you look like and behave like people in your family.
Also, as children, we were very impressionable. By default, we repeat what others do around us. It is very likely that we picked up habits unconsciously.
So, if we haven't done the healthy work of working on ourselves and our healthy charaters, we cannot automatically change as adults.
Does it mean that we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes? Are our children going to get sucked into this cycle?
No! No! No!
We can choose to RETRAIN ourselves. This simply means that we can learn new character traits. Over the years, I've learnt patience and self-control. How did I do that?
With God's help and loads of practice. Why do I do all of this?
If I must raise excellent children, I have to be an excellent parent. Being perfect is impossible on this side of eternity but excellence is achievable. It begins with making intentional choices about my behaviour.
The best part is that no matter how old your kids are, you can start making the necessary adjustments today!
