Let’s write then!
I am very much into writing – from small to big pieces. Thanks to my job profile which also demands a good writing skill, I keep on searching for ways to improve it. My subscription to https://instaread.co/ has helped me. I was reading an article on it and came across worth sharing pointers as below –
- First words are the first draft. It needs to be revised multiple times. Even I tried to make the topics an eye-catchy one to grab the attention of the audience.
- Writing offers a unique opportunity for ‘do-over’. Hence, keep revising until you get satisfied with it. And that’s why authors seem smart in their book because they have done multiple editing to refine their message to express it elegantly and clearly. I used to find multiple mistakes with my blogs if I give it a read after a few days. Hence, I started reading every writing at least 3 times (planning to increase this number though!).
- Jargons make it worst for readers and it is only a way to hide our false intellectualism. I believe the expert is one who can explain the concept in the easiest way possible. For example, if I change the line - "revenue is the quintessence of any business" to "revenue is the basis of any business", then understanding will be more in the latter case.
- Avoid using clichés as they have lost their impact. For example, "I wrote this article at the speed of light" can be changed to "I write this article in 5 minutes", then it becomes simple and specific.
- Write in the active voice (not passive voice). For example, "I supported that club to grow." is better than "The growth of that club was supported by me."
- Keep the writing simple and straight to the point and avoid rambling around.
- Take a walk or a short break (of 10 min) and then come back to read it again. It will give a fresh start to eliminate errors. I love to take a short walk. One can also have a short tea break or chit-chat with colleagues. Many times, these short breaks may provide a new idea for the write-up also.
- Starting should be catchy. It will keep the audience hook until the end. I am into public speaking where we use the technique of storytelling or asking a few questions to the audience to instantly hook the audience. This concept of great starting should be used in writing also.
- Keep it well-structures. Break the whole piece into points and subheads. Writing is like storytelling (human race is fond of stories) and undoubtedly no one wants to hear a bad structured/confusing story.
I believe everyone deserves to be heard.
I believe everyone wants to express themselves.
And the best way to accomplish it would be to WRITE.
Take your pen or keyboard and start now.
Start small and take your first step.
