Let's unlock the promise of EHRs
It's a tall order, and starts from the ground up
Electronic health records (EHRs) have streamlined and coordinated care, while helping organizations to move toward digital patient files. Still, they have a long way to go before they fulfill their potential.
Challenges with UI, data integration, compatibility and more largely stem from EHRs' being used in a role for which they weren't designed. The technology we have was primarily created to document billing compliance, not to improve the delivery of care.
EHRs require more than patchwork revisions. The tech needs a complete overhaul so it incorporates tools that address clinicians' and patients' greatest needs—a user-friendly system that integrates AI and other emerging technologies to capture and share data that patients and clinicians need and want.
Perhaps most importantly, the EHR of the future must empower patients to take charge of their health, giving them access to digital tools like automated monitoring and wearable devices.

5 年Agree. Many EHR companies becoming open to providing API access is a great first step in this direction. But we also would benefit so much by bringing in human centered design into the EHR itself
As a Nurse I have the privilege of working with patients. Optimizing EHR systems yields an opportunity for me to spend more time improving and caring for my patients. I am proud to work at Northwell who are innovating the way healthcare is delivered!
