Hi! My name is Parissa. This is "Modern Badass: A Field Guide", where Modern Badasses can feel seen, understood and valued. And, it's also a place for others to crack the code on the Modern Badasses in their lives (and maybe learn some badassery themselves). Want this in your inbox 2x/month? Modern Badasses like you (or someone you lead) are competitive because of their ambition, creativity and excitement for what's next. They are often visionaries and the change agents we need to help propel us forward.
And, I'll let you in on a little secret. Modern Badasses, when they are at their extreme, are like perfectionist control freaks. They may say things like, "Oh, that's an interesting idea. Let's try mine." while what they are thinking is "Let's try my (superior) idea instead." while possibly not acknowledging yours.
To them, it is a good idea to be that perfectionist control freak on paper. And that approach has undoubtedly garnered them success even when they've felt like they were misunderstood geniuses. I've been there - I've had success as the perfectionist control freak who has preferred to do things my way.
The truth is that there's no prize above the grand prize.
Your natural tendencies are to be assertive, ambitious, competitive, goal-oriented, etc. You might wish to outshine and outperform your peers. You'll do whatever it takes to achieve a goal you've set.
Or, you might wish to be in control all the time. Your take-charge attitude shows your love of challenges. You do what you know has to be done.
You're an incredible asset to any organization. That's awesome until it's not. Every strength in excess becomes a weakness and you can start to diminish your value. A "win at all costs" attitude may make others feel that winning is more important to you than leading and nurturing your team.
Counterintuitive truth: guaranteeing that you're winning all the time can have negative returns.

Einstein was right.
Here's an Einstein quote that I've shared in my book which offers a lovely distinction for Modern Badasses to consider:
Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value.
It's evident you can always be at the top of the pack. But are you seen as valuable and not successful? The invitation to you is to realize two things:
Your journey starts now.
