Let's think outside the box and create architecture that considers the entire ecosystem. Inspired by Ar. Joyce Hwang

What if buildings were designed with the needs of nonhuman animals in mind? Joyce Hwang, an architect and associate professor at the University at Buffalo, New York, believes that we can and should integrate their needs into our human architecture. By doing so, we create more sustainable and livable spaces for both humans and animals. Let's think outside the box and create architecture that considers the entire ecosystem.

  • The relationship between modern architecture and the nonhuman world has been complex and often fraught, with architects historically prioritizing human needs and desires over the natural environment. However, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of incorporating nature into architectural design, both for environmental sustainability and for the well-being of building occupants.

  • Some architects have embraced the concept of "biophilic design," which seeks to create buildings that connect people with nature by incorporating natural elements such as light, air, water, and vegetation into the built environment. This approach recognizes that humans have a deep psychological and physiological connection to nature, and that buildings that reflect and enhance that connection can have a positive impact on human health and well-being.

  • Other architects have sought to create buildings that are more in harmony with the natural world through innovative uses of sustainable materials, green roofs and walls, and other features that reduce a building's environmental impact. By incorporating renewable energy and other "green" technologies into their designs, architects can help mitigate the negative effects of human activity on the planet.

Ultimately, the relationship between modern architecture and the nonhuman world is complex and multifaceted. However, as architects continue to embrace the importance of incorporating nature into their designs, buildings can become more sustainable, healthy, and harmonious with the natural environment, benefiting both humans and the planet as a whole.
