Let's Talk About... Yapping

Welcome to "The Connect Effect Conversations," where we explore innovative ways to relearn the art of deeper connections in this digital age for leaders, teams, and customers.

Tips, Conversation starters and resources to follow. Let's talk!

The Question: What is Yapping?

According to Merriam-Webster, to yap is “to talk in a shrill insistent way” — the human conversational equivalent of a hairless Chihuahua’s bark.

In today's digital world, where social isolation has become more prevalent, the ability to “yap” is actually a compliment and a valuable skill embraced by Gen Z on platforms like TikTok. To “yap” means to have the ability to talk about anything, reflecting an essential aspect of social connection.

So what does that mean at work and with customers? Well, in a world increasingly dominated by digital interactions, fostering environments where people feel comfortable to express themselves at length can help rebuild the connections we've lost. What if, like Gen Z, we reclaimed “yapping” as a positive trait?

Why Yapping and Small Talk Matters

Experts believe it can increase collaboration, innovation, and well-being. A study conducted by the University of Kansas found that small talk positively impacts employees by boosting their positive social emotions and sense of connection throughout the workday (KU School of Business ). Another study published in the Journal of Language and Speech found that higher levels of reciprocal conversation during small talk are associated with increased task enjoyment and productivity (Well+Good ). Ultimately, engaging in small talk builds TRUST and strengthens workplace and customer relationships.

Key Points:

  • Builds Rapport: Engaging in small talk helps to establish initial connections and build rapport with colleagues.
  • Reduces Stress: Casual conversations can reduce workplace tension and create a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Enhances Collaboration: By fostering a culture of open communication, small talk can lead to better teamwork and collaboration.
  • Boosts Wellbeing and Creates Vibrant Culture: According to Gallup’s Q12 report, having a friend at work is a lead indicator of a healthy workplace culture.

The Opportunity: Yapping meets Tech

How can we combine the best of human connection with the best of technology at work and with customers? Here are a few ideas:

  • Virtual Watercooler Tools: Schedule informal chats and encourage spontaneous interactions among remote team members, or make sure you schedule on additional time to meetings for these types of informal conversations.
  • Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): Utilise AR/VR for more immersive small talk experiences, making virtual interactions feel more personal and engaging.
  • AI-Powered Icebreakers: Implement AI tools to suggest conversation starters and topics based on participants' interests and recent activities. Like personalised ice breakers, or conversation prompts.

Tips: Yap Well... Questions to Prompt Small Talk

  1. About Them NOW: In virtual settings, start by asking about their current situation to make the conversation more personal and engaging. Example: "What has been keeping you busy lately?"
  2. About Them WORK: Inquire about their current work to understand their professional context and establish a connection based on shared experiences. Example: "What projects are you currently working on that you're excited about?"
  3. About Them NEXT: Ask about their future plans or goals to show interest in their aspirations and long-term vision.Example: "What are your upcoming goals or projects you're looking forward to?

Actual conversations in my opinion are far better connection builders, there is this belief that because of the amazing abilities of technology we have better connections. Tech is a tool to assist us not the only tool, so I think small talk and actual talking to people has massive benefits.
