Let's Talk UPS...

How do we effectively communicate the frustration induced by Load Shedding?

We could compare it to watching a “family meeting” and wishing Live TV had a 2x speed button. We could say it’s akin to being stuck behind a Polo driver in the fast lane who just won’t move. It’s the ‘stay at home’ equivalent of:

  • Getting flashed by a speeding camera (except those have lights)
  • The gum chewing lady behind the Checkers counter when you enter the wrong pin.
  • Someone from City Power saying, “our technicians are working on it”.

Yeah, South Africa has a lot to love, but its inhabitants also share many frustrations. They say there are only three guarantees in life; death, taxes and everyone’s favourite electricity line indiscriminately letting us down.

This frustration is compounded when you factor in that many of us are now working from home. We know, we know, they asked us to stay indoors and then they cut our power – it’s a nightmare.

However, the way we see it, we could complain until the cows come home (or until the lights come on), but we’re not in the business of complaints (we save that for some of our Twitter fam). Rather, we’re in the business of solutions that make your lives better.

No, we aren’t selling generators (good idea though), nor are we offering coal to Eskom (also, good idea, but not quite feasible). Instead, our market is you, the customer with a need for uninterrupted Internet regardless of Level 3, Stage 6 or Wave 5.

Enter the Vox UPS (you knew there was a pitch coming): a solution for homes and businesses across the country that’s making Load Shedding a bit more bearable (hey, we can’t put your lights on, but we can make sure your Netflix and Chill game is still on point).

We’ll start with the Home:

Ever been working on a document, lost power and said “goodbye” to your mornings work along with “adios” to your momentum? If you’re like us, you didn’t save because you were busy, forgot to check your Eskom Se Push app and are likely to be caught off guard. Day ruined, right? But what if it didn’t need to be?

Our Fibre UPS is designed to circumvent the struggle of unwanted connectivity loss by providing you with up to four hours of uptime. That means you can probably survive your first slot, let it charge in between and be fully functional by the time your next one kicks in (yeah, it’s weird talking about it so normally, but we’ve embraced the darkness).

Compatible with two devices (but calm down, Macgyver, we don’t mean it’ll power your TV and charge your phone), the UPS can run a Router, your Fibre box and Wi-Fi Booster if required. This means you can connect to the Internet as per usual and, by leaving it plugged in permanently, your devices won’t even switch off for a second when the power disconnects – it’s literally normal service from the word “go”. The best part? It starts at R99.00pm (but the benefits are priceless).

But maybe you don’t need a simple Home device and your workspace demands higher usage. Never fear, because our Home Office UPS is designed specifically for that.?

Aesthetically it looks like the briefcase Iron Man carries his suit in, and technically it works just as well. With a 500-Watt Output powering up to 5 devices, you can enjoy similar levels of uptime as well as connect your PC or Screen along with your Internet.

It doesn’t need a team of installers to come in and fit (although we do offer 24/7 support), but rather the instructions are simple, and once you’re connected, you’re golden. Well, maybe not golden, but definitely a little lighter. It’s an amazing way to keep your wits about you (you can still stream, surf or research while sitting in the dark) when everyone else is losing theirs. Within a few minutes, your UPS is powered and ready to keep you going – and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg either.

So as tempting as it is to connect a power line from your home to the next working traffic light, you don’t need such extreme measures when you’re in the loop with Vox. We may not be able to avoid the spread of the darkness with a mask and sanitiser, but we can make waiting for your shift to end a bit more bearable.?

Now, if only we could get one to that Randburg substation…
