Let's Talk Trash! - 1: Recycling

Have you ever wondered what happens to that plastic bottle you toss in the bin? Or that old phone gathering dust in your drawer? It's not just trash; it's a valuable resource waiting for a second life.

I had never spotted this WEEE Centre recycling bin outside the Carrefour Supermart in Sarit Center until my friend Elizabeth Christine Nyambura CEM? told me about them when I was looking for a place to take my electronics trash! If you're like me, now you know.

But do you know why it matters? Why Recycle?

  1. For Environmental Impact - Recycling conserves resources, reduces pollution, and helps combat climate change. In Kenya, where our natural beauty is a treasure, recycling is a way to protect it.
  2. Economic Boost - Recycling creates jobs, stimulates local economies, and reduces the need for expensive landfills. It's a win-win for our planet and our pockets.
  3. Health reasons - When dangerous radioactive substances, heavy metals and chemicals from e-waste end up in landfills, it is possible for them to up in our rivers making the water unsafe for drinking, cleaning and irrigation and aquatic life.

The world is drowning in waste, and Kenya is not immune. But we have the power to turn this crisis into an opportunity. It is possible because some countries have done it! By embracing recycling, we can reduce our environmental footprint, create a more sustainable future, and even uncover new economic avenues.

So let's Talk Trash (And Treasure!)

Recycling isn't just about paper and plastic. It encompasses a wide range of materials, from e-waste to glass, metals, and even organic waste. Each type has its own unique recycling process, and we'll delve into those details in the weeks to come.

Are you #recycling? What are you #recycling? Where do you take it/them for #recycling? Share your thoughts, questions, and experiences below. Let's learn and inspire each other to make #recycling a part of our daily lives.

It's actually a lot better to just throw it away most times since recycling is a mess. A ton of the plastic waste in the oceans actually comes from recycles. https://www.polymathicbeing.com/p/the-dirty-secret-of-recycling
