Today, I want to talk to you about modelling behaviours and values. As a manager, establishing values-based leadership and expected behaviours begins with YOU.

Let’s break this down. Firstly, what do I mean by Modelling?

Of course, I don’t mean striding up and down a catwalk in beautiful clothes.

Modelling is when we observe the behaviour of another person, often someone we admire, and imitate that behaviour. ?It often doesn’t rely upon someone being instructed, it is something which happens almost unconsciously, without thinking, though can be as a result of observation and coaching.

A strong manager knows how important it is to model the behaviours they want to see in their Team. ?By demonstrating and modelling your organisation’s values and behaviours, you work towards everyone in the team, understanding how to demonstrate these in all aspects of their own work and to encourage reflection and deal openly and transparently with any issues as they arise.

What about behaviours? What do I mean by this??

Behaviours are the way we conduct ourselves, both in the way we do things and the way we deal with others. That’s a really important part of this exercise because again it helps the team to build an inclusive workplace.

Finally, values. Applied in a business sense this is all about the principles and standards of your business.

I’m not advocating that you develop a team of clones, individuality is vital for a healthy culture. By leading by modelling the behaviours and values, you can establish those which feel right for your organisation and for your team.

Just a few small adjustments in your behaviour can have a huge impact.

1.??????Sit down with your team, don’t just tell them, show them how you would like things done.

2.??????Lead by example, and demonstrate to the team, the behaviours you value. Use role play in team meetings to demonstrate the best way to deal with situations.

3.??????Don’t get involved in office politics – stay impartial, and encourage the same in your team

4.??????Don’t leave them guessing: communication is a huge part of the success of a team

Here are three very simple hacks, and how I remember them.

To DRIVE change, you need a CAR……

1.??????Credit where it’s due – acknowledge a job well done, say thank you, praise the team

2.??????Accountability – Making mistakes is an opportunity for learning from them. We are all human.

3.??????Respect – Say please and thank you. Sharing the workload fairly and having an open culture.

This is one of the most cost-effective ways of changing your organisation for the better. All that is left for you to do, is to sit back and watch your team flourish!
