Let's talk Product EQ ??

Let's talk Product EQ ??

Tomorrow I'm joined by special guest and author Kate Leto for a fireside discussion about something many product people don't think about, but that affects their daily work nonetheless: Product EQ

Product EQ is a fascinating way to think about what sets one stellar company apart from any other. While so many others talk about the tactics, or brand or positioning, Kate Leto boils it down to something much deeper and human-based. She says it’s the people behind all of it. It's about how they think and work and make decisions as a team. That's their competitive advantage.

So that's what we're talking about tomorrow. You can join the discussion:

Webinar: Hiring Product Managers: Using Product EQ to go beyond culture and skills

What's it all about?

Now, Kate's written the book on this subject, so I highly recommend going to get yourself a copy of that. But to give you a bit of a primer of what we'll be talking about tomorrow, and to help you think of some questions to bring along, here's the gist.

Product EQ is a key part of your skillset as a product person that looks beyond the core tools and techniques we're all expected to have and maintain, and into your emotional intelligence competencies, like conflict management, collaboration, influencing, empathy and more.

Focus on building your Product EQ, including active listening, empathy, conflict management, organisational awareness, visionary leadership, resilience, teamwork and collaboration, and more

While these skills have somewhat fallen by the wayside compared to the popularity of more tangiable skills like prioritization, roadmapping, journey mapping, and more, Kate points out how important these skills are, and even demonstrates measurable evidence that stronger Product EQ leads to more equipped product teams and better product decisions.

Far from intangible, tomorrow we'll be taking a look at the tools that Kate has provided for us to measure and learn about our own Product EQ, including the Human Skills wheel and exercise.

You might know how you fare with your technical skills, but how about with your human skills? We'll dive into that tomorrow.

Build Essential Product skills with the Product EQ Wheel

Kate's got more of these tools and exercises up her sleeve too, and will walk us through how to use the Role Canvas and the Product Practice Canvas that she's developed.

Taking advantage of the fireside format, I'll be asking Kate for some practical takes on how Product EQ plays into hiring decisions for companies, what it means for folks who are looking to make a difference in their next round of interviews or step up in their career, and how it plays out when it comes to conflict, self awareness, and the idea of culture fit vs culture add.

In particular, I'm curious about understanding how someone goes about understanding if they have strong or weak spots in their Product EQ, and how they go about spotting and improving those.

There's probably a lot more to talk about too! What other questions should I ask? Let me know in the comments, or turn up tomorrow with your own questions ??

Register now, and share this with your colleagues. See you by the fireplace! ??
