Let’s talk about pie...
...pie charts.?I hate them.?They have their place, but unlike actual pie (cherry! blueberrry! tortiere! pizza!) which rarely disappoint and are always appropriate, pie charts almost always leave me wanting.
In supply chain (as many places, I am sure) , visualization enables grasping of a much larger story in a snap.?But a pie chart? Sure, they show ratios well, but so do tree maps.?And stacked bars show ratios AND scale! And they can show change over time or region or … (take that, pie chart!)
I’m not saying that a pie chart does not have its place.?Just that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
PS; a donut chart is just a pie chart with a hole in it.

Shush, I'm being told pie charts are great! So visual and easy to grasp. Apparently that includes data sets with 10+ categories. And the accepted standard for an even more professional and scientific look seems to be adding a fake 3D effect with a crazy perspective, using a color palette ranging from lime green to mint green (with a separate legend, of course) and further improving it by making it rotate - with a shadow, of course... ??
