Let's talk about.... P A T T E R N mixing!
I heard someone say recently, that when they think of me, they automatically think of mixing patterns. This is so second nature to me, that I don't even think about it anymore, it is just ingrained in me as a way of life.
To me, mixing patterns is really about creating texture. The two go hand and hand in my opinion. The patterns act as different textures because they can create definition and interest, but they are flat. My favorite medium for pattern mixing is fabric, but I love how this can translate into something printed or digital as well.
Here are my tips for perfectly paired patterns:
O N E : Pick a neutral...
This may not mean what you think. The idea is to choose something that can ACT as a neutral, not necessarily something that is neutral in color. Things that work well are stripes, dots, plaid and leopard print. Another option is a pattern that is made of a single color with white.
T W O : Scale...
When you are mixing patterns, another tip is to change the scale of one of them. This works well on your neutral pattern. By using a smaller scale, it is taking attention away from one of the patterns, and helps draw your eye to the main one.
T H R E E : Contrast...
The more contrast you have, the bolder the combo. If you want to go for something more subtle, try using prints in the same color story.
F O U R : Be Confident!
Confidence is key! If you love a combo it will show. Don't be afraid to take a little risk. Big bold patterns can be just as beautiful as subdued, subtle ones.
F I V E : The more you mix, the more it matters...
Nothing says you can't mix more than 2 patterns, but the more that you combine, the more you need to pay attention. I like to throw in something solid or in a very small scale to mimic a solid. Also, using at least 2 patterns with a similar color palette helps create balance.
S I X : Have fun!
Most importantly...have fun!
Pattern Mixing can be intimidating, but don't let it be! It's a great way to freshen things up, add some interest, and bring yourself and others JOY!
Until next time...
