Let’s Talk Onions!!???Most of the members of the Onion Family are rather stinky!

I have planted my Raised Bed Garden for the second year.?I use the Onion sets around the seeds to use a disruptor!!??

How to get rid of onion pests?

  • The fact that these onion pests work in patches or bulb by bulb down a row, makes it easier to spot plants in trouble and get them out. Scattering onion planting throughout the garden helps, and removing the soil is also a good idea.

Here are some of the members of the onion family:

·???????Scallions. also known as green or spring onions, are delicate with a strong onion flavor.

·???????Leeks. are one of the milder tasting members in the onion family. ...

·???????Chives. Chives are one of the smaller bulb plants in the onion family. ...

·???????Shallots. Shallots looks like an onion with multiple cloves.

?

Similarities: The onion family tolerate chilly temperatures which means that can be planted when it is cooler or the perennial plants will start appearing in the spring. This family is very low maintenance to grow. While you eat the green leaves/stems of chives, you can also eat the leaves of the other veggie members of the onion family.?You do have to be careful so you leave enough green growth on top to allow the bulb to properly form. Of course, the bulb of the veggie family members is edible too!

Differences:?While garlic, leeks, onion and shallots have a long growing season, scallions mature faster.??Chives are perennial plants, but the rest of the veggies in the onion family are annuals.???Garlic and shallots are typically grown from cloves.?While onions can be grown from sets (immature bulbs), shallots and onions can also be grown from seeds.?Garlic is ready to be harvested when the bottom half of the leaves die out and turn brown, but onions and shallots are ready when their green tops flop over.?Except for scallions, the bulb part of the onion family needs to be cured which helps for storing.

Here are some uses for Onions:

?Onions and frozen windshield.

If you live somewhere particularly cold, sometimes you know when a big frost is coming. As you may know, scraping your car off in the morning is an annoying task that nobody particularly looks forward to. If you want to get ahead of this trend, why not try cutting a raw onion and rubbing it on your car’s windshield? If you do this, the chemicals in the onion can help prevent the frost from forming at all.

Soak up the smell of paint.

If If you’re doing any serious home renovation that includes painting, you know just how strong the odors can be in an enclosed space. To help absorb some of those strong smells, try putting a bunch of sliced onions in a bowl of water and let it do its magic. Leave the window open as a bonus—in no time at all, that smell should be gone!

??Clean a barbecue or a grill.ny serious

If you use your grill a lot, it’s bound to get grimy and greasy and whatever else. Although you can put a ton of elbow grease into scrubbing everything down, there’s actually an easier way. All you have to do is heat up your grill. cut an onion in half, stick a fork in the back of it and scrub it down. The chemicals will cut through the grease and when you’re done, you can give it all a quick rinse to get rid of the onion flavor.

Keep caterpillars away from your garden.

If you’re trying to grow herbs and keep finding your plants eaten up by pests, there’s actually a simple solution that doesn’t use chemical pesticides. To keep the caterpillars at bay, try soaking some grated onion in water overnight and then put the onion water into a spray bottle. Spray your plants down with that and watch as the bugs stay away.

Keep Avocados from turning brown.

Eating your avocados when they’re perfectly ripe is a tough thing to do, no matter what the circumstances are. Still, there’s at least one easy trick you can use to keep them from turning brown after you’ve cut into them. To do this, all you have to do is store your cut avocado half with a cut red onion. Just try it out for yourself—it definitely works!

I’m intrigued by the onions on the windshield for frost. Might have to try that next winter. Last night Lexi found some wild onions in the yard. She dug them up and used them for our Cinco de Mayo tacos. I guess that’s why she’s in culinary and food sustainability.
