Let's Talk About Night Owls For A Second

You’ve heard the self-congratulatory saying, “The early bird gets the worm” I’m sure.

Now let me add on to it: “But the night owl gets the mouse.”

Ha!

Left to my own devices I’d rather stay up until 4am, go to bed, and wake up around 11am.

That’s the perfect schedule for me.

Unfortunately, the corporate world glorifies early risers, and if I want them to pay me, well then I need to be at their ridiculously early meetings too.

Oh, and having a 15 month old daughter probably has something to do with my early mornings now, too. . .

Add on top of that the fact that I’ve had a cold over the past couple days and I’ve been going to sleep around 9pm every night.

I hate how good I feel when I wake up.

As a lifelong night owl, it’s disgusting to feel great at 7am.

Even still, I don’t think it’s the early rising that’s causing it.

It’s not even the amount of sleep (alone) that’s doing it.

The main detail?

Getting up at the same time every day, no matter what time I go to sleep.

I think that’s it because I can think back to the worst times in my life & my wake up times were allllll over the place. 11am. 2pm. 8am.

Whatever man.

And I’d be miserable.

A husk of a man.

But, when I started getting up at the same time every day, every week, and do it for months on end?

My general disposition got WAY better.

So run your own experiment.

Do you get up at weird times? Pick a single weird time, and make that your “get out of bed or else” time regardless of being a night owl or an early bird.

And maybe we can shut up these sanctimonious songbirds once and for all.

Best thoughts, ~Jonathan
