I have to confess... I totally missed the May edition. Time flies!
But I'm back with the June edition, let's get started.
If you would like to know more about the background of this newsletter, please check out edition #1.
Let's Talk About Mocap #8 - June 2024
1?? When an audition changed cinema forever
An anthology of the work of Andy Serkis, who forever changed mocap with his role as Gollum in 'Lord of the Rings'. And it did not stop there...
2?? Mocap research: Medieval Combat
Not often do you come across interesting research that involves motion capture. But this research by the LUT University in Finland is interesting, it deep-dives into medieval combat with swords and shields while dressed in full armor.
3?? Autodesk acquires Wonder Dynamics
An interesting development in AI. Autodesk has acquired Wonder Dynamics , an AI production to get 3D characters in live-action footage. I have been quite impressed by what they could do in Wonder Studio.
Autodesk's goal is to empower artists by giving them easy tools in their 3D tool set, including Maya.
4?? No Separate Oscar for Motion Capture
It has been a discussion for years; are mocap actors eligible for a separate award? Until now this is not the case, but fans have rallied for it. Andy Serkis jumped into the discussion and said NO. He argues that mocap acting is just like regular acting.
But, he adds, motion capture actors should get the same respect as normal acting.

5?? Sony pulls interview with The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann
In a recent interview, Neil talked about how AI and the ability to do motion capture from home would reduce costs and technical hurdles. Saying so in the current difficult market situation with lots of layoffs, this did not resonate well.
After a rectification by Neil about not saying this, Sony eventually decided to pull the full interview because of "significant errors and inaccuracies that don't represent his perspective and values (including topics such as animation, writing, technology, AI, and future projects)".
