Over the past 12 months, I have embarked on a personal and professional journey with three goals: improve my health, be a better leader and learn more. Along the way, I have indeed learned a lot, read a lot, watched countless videos, tested a lot of advice, successfully implemented some of it and discarded quite a bit.
What fell by the wayside were self-limiting behaviors and ways of thinking, many kilos of fat and a few work issues that annoyed me far too much in the past. In return, I now have fantastic blood pressure and great clarity in my professional environment. And regular visits to Berghain.
?
As you can see, there are a few queer perspectives on the classic topics of work-life balance and leadership. And that's exactly what I want to talk about in a weekly series of posts here on LinkedIn.
Each time there is a topic where I speak from my experience of my journey and my personal perspective as a leader. I will often refer to articles or videos from creators that have particularly inspired me, like Andrew Huberman, Dan Koe , Thomas DeLauer, Nikol Johnson and Harry Has. It will be in English because I have many international friends and like to communicate in that language.
I will try to give new impulses and also go beyond the usual "work-life balance" topics or take a controversial look at them. For starters, I don't like the concept of work-life balance, because it implies that you put your life on hold, so to speak, when you work. With this attitude, health problems are inevitable and no amount of Yoga will fix it. Instead I took six weeks off last summer - and it was a game changer.
On a daily basis, I simply "disappear" for an hour or two and concentrate on the really important issues. I've been doing this in the morning (BTW I am a Huberman-Style lark) or during the day if possible for over a year now and not only do I get a lot done in this time, but I also gain great clarity when I dive into the depths of my brain without any distractions. If I think of something I want to keep, I write it down on paper (legendary material! Einstein and Shakespeare are believed to have found it useful) or make small drawings to visualize my thoughts.

Against the same background, I introduced Focus Friday in the office: no meetings, no unnecessary discussions, no new assignments on Friday. Or when was something discussed on Friday that couldn't have been discussed on Monday or Tuesday? And how often has a meeting on Friday afternoon ruined your weekend? Correct: the former never, the latter far too often.
At first, I only introduced Focus Friday for myself and my line managers. From there, it seeped naturally into the teams. For some time now, everyone has usually been having their focus day on Fridays. And what has happened? The outcome is better and the week has lost its terror because you have a day for the important tasks that require time and concentration (yes, looking at you, Eisenhower Matrix). As a result, you can finish the week on a serene note and go into the weekend feeling organized. I could talk for hours about the benefits of Focus Friday. If you'd like to hear more, let me know in the comments or DM.

You can also look forward to posts about (men's) health issues, my observations on fashion and leadership (yep, that's a thing) and what makes Berghain a perfect place for leaders (spoiler: you can learn A LOT). And of course, I'll be sharing lots of videos and articles on all of these topics so you don't have to trawl the internet to find answers to your questions.
?
And above all: I don't want to bore you and be yet another corporate BS text generator, but talk to you authentically, wittily and with a light-hearted look on leadership and life.

1 年I just hope you're not using your focus hour on Friday to write these weekly posts ?? it would be a shame. On the same note I wish you the best outcome for this series and that you might even benefit from this as well. Creating content can easily turn into a duty (carrying a backpack filled with pressure and stress) and I really hope that you'll enjoy writing down your journey here as long as possible. ?? I'm excited to read about your experience. ??
