Let's talk About Layoffs

Layoffs are happening across the board these days. It doesn’t matter how big or small your company is, when the money isn’t there, they start cutting employees loose. Being laid off isn’t in any way a reflection of someone’s work ethic, it’s simply the luck of the draw.?

When that happens to a friend or family member, it’s your chance to show up as a steady person they can depend on.

1. If it’s someone you know personally, be mindful of the plans you make together. Have a game night instead of a night out. Go for a walk instead of ice cream. While they search for a new job with a new income, focus on making no-cost plans.
2. Listen as much or as little as they need. Some people want to vent about what’s going on to a listening ear, while others just want to talk about other things in their life. Offer to listen without being pushy.
3. Use your contacts. If you know the person is a great worker and an asset to any company, make an effort to help them find somewhere new to work– with their permission, of course. This could mean talking to someone you know in that industry or reaching out to your LinkedIn community.?
4. Remind the person of their positive qualities. Being laid off can be pretty disheartening. Lift the person up every chance you can with affirmations.?

Above all, just be there in the best way you see fit. You’d want the same level of support if you were in that situation!
