Let's talk about flexible working practices
In today's fast-paced world, workplace flexibility isn't just a perk—it's essential.
We recognise the value of flexible working approaches where practical. In fact, Quantum Leap Global is a virtual organisation that works remotely or at our clients’ sites, depending on clients’ needs.?
Research shows that well-managed, flexible working practices support a more diverse and inclusive culture. This, in turn, positively links to better innovation, talent attraction and retention, and business performance.
Flexible working approaches include remote work, flexible hours, compressed workweeks, job-sharing, and customed work arrangements, to name a few.?
However, for flexible working to operate effectively, there are several ‘must-haves’. First, there is a need for appropriate governance, spearheaded by a clear policy and procedures. Linked to this, it is essential to have strong communication between leaders and their teams, including clarity on roles, responsibilities, accountabilities, and timeframes for product and/or service deliverables. Leaders also need to focus on outcomes rather than taking a micro-managing, "I didn't see your green light on in messenger...", approach.?Continuously monitoring the effectiveness of arrangements with feedback and making the necessary adjustments as needed is also important.?
But even if companies support flexible working arrangements, those who choose to work remotely most frequently—such as women and working parents—may suffer most from 'proximity bias'. This means that those who are physically present in the office are often favoured. Without deliberate strategies to mitigate this bias, remote workers may miss out on crucial opportunities for networking, challenging assignments, promotions, and career progression. Such scenarios can result in the?loss of key talent.
Having witnessed the consequences of mismanaged flexible working processes several times, we regard it to be a challenge that leaders must confront. As leaders and business owners, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that all employees, regardless of their work location, have equal access to opportunities for growth and advancement. As mentioned, the benefits of doing it right are many—for our businesses and the people working in them.
It is also important to note that recent legislative changes have expanded Australian workers’ rights to request such arrangements.
