Let's talk about finding balance.
It's been a few weeks since I've had the space to sit and write. Work and life have been insanely busy, and I've been reflecting on the idea of balance. More specifically, I've been pondering the idea that balance is not a static state you achieve. It's a dynamic process that requires continuous effort. I recently shared concepts of rebalancing events and activities on the FMB Network, and I'm gonna explore in more here.
In a world that's moving quickfast, the need for balance is clearer than ever. We often encounter what I like to call "rebalancing events" – those moments when life throws us a curveball that disrupts our equilibrium. These events can take many forms: starting a new project, pursuing a promotion, the kids being out of school, taking on the role of caregiver for a family member or partner, commencing a new job, or even ending an old one.
In essence, any event that causes a significant shift in our energy and resources, be it mental, physical, or emotional, qualifies as a rebalancing event.
The most common sign that we're facing a rebalancing event is feeling overwhelmed. When you find yourself drowning in tasks and responsibilities or hiding from them, it's a clear signal that it's time to recalibrate and reassess your priorities. Here's the beauty of rebalancing: it's not about figuring out how to add more to your plate. Instead, it's about reallocating your resources and energy to regain equilibrium and peace (pronounced control) across the most important dimensions of your life.
So, let's explore some practical examples of rebalancing activities based on my experience over the past few weeks. These are strategies that can help you regain control when life gets chaotic:
1. Adjusting Your Physical Activities
One of the first areas where you can regain balance is by adapting your physical activities. Your workout routine, daily walk, or weekend hikes are vital sources of energy and well-being. However, when a rebalancing event occurs, it's essential to modify these activities to suit your current reality.
If your new project demands more of your time, don't be afraid to temporarily scale back or move your physical activities to a different time. I had to deprioritize some areas of my workout plan, and I'm exploring going from hitting the gym afterwork to before (6am-ish).
2. Deprioritizing Non-Essential Projects
We often find ourselves entangled in projects that, upon closer inspection, are neither essential nor urgent. These are often driven by a sense of obligation, self-imposed expectations, and shame. For example, you may feel compelled to do or complete something simply because you told yourself you would, even though it's not urgent, tied to any business or work agreement, or not impacting anyone else's world but yours.
It's crucial to deprioritize or release these types of commitments. This doesn't mean you're quitting or failing; it means you're preserving your energy for what truly matters.
3. Taking Mental Health Days
Your mental wellbeing is the cornerstone of your ability to manage and adapt to life's challenges. When you find yourself overwhelmed, it might be time to take a mental health day. Use this day for rest and self-care, or if you're feeling more energetic, dedicate it to getting your life together.
I recently took a mental health day because I woke up exhausted and overwhelmed. Half of the day off was spent recharging, while the other half was dedicated to analyzing my commitments and identifying what I could release to create more mental space for tackling the projects that were causing the most stress.
Again, balance is not a one-and-done achievement. It's a continuous process that allows us to adapt to life's unpredictable twists and turns. Here's why rebalancing should be part of your routine:
1. Prevents Burnout
By recognizing when you need to rebalance, you're taking proactive steps to prevent burnout. Burnout is often the result of ignoring your body and mind's check engine lights.

2. Enhances Productivity
A well-balanced life is a more productive one. When you allocate your energy and time where they are most needed, you can accomplish more with less stress and effort.
3. Boosts Wellbeing
Achieving and maintaining balance enhances your overall wellbeing. When you're balanced, you thrive. You're happier, healthier, and better equipped to handle life's challenges.
4. Supports Long-Term Success
Life is a marathon. By practicing the art of rebalancing, you're setting the stage for long-term success. You're learning to navigate the highs and lows of life with grace and resilience.
Now, let's talk about the practical steps you can take to implement rebalancing in your life:
Self-Awareness
The first step is recognizing when you're facing a rebalancing event. Listen to your body and mind. Pay attention to signs of overwhelm, stress, and fatigue. The sooner you identify these signals, the more effectively you can rebalance.
Prioritization
Not all tasks and commitments are created equal! Learn to prioritize what's most important to you and let go of what can be deferred or eliminated. Remember that it's okay to say no.
Regular Check-Ins
Make a habit of regularly checking in with yourself. I encourage you to create a daily, weekly, or monthly practice. Could be a few minutes in the morning and evening. I also have an hour on my calendar every Saturday to sit and go through what's on my plate and the associated feelings. Sometimes that 60 minutes will become 90 minutes or longer. The weekend provides me the flexibility to stay in this space until I'm done.
Adaptability
Understand that rebalancing is not a sign of weakness, failure, or incompetence. It demonstrates adaptability, resilience, and commitment to preserving your health and wellbeing. Even as a Wellness Coach, I still have to remind myself sometimes.
In conclusion, finding and maintaining balance in life is a dynamic and ever-evolving process. Embrace the journey and remember that it's okay to adjust your priorities, take a step back, and release commitments that no longer serve you. You'll not only maintain balance but also thrive when facing life's small and large challenges.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed, take it as a sign to rebalance and rediscover the space, peace, and equilibrium you deserve.
