Let’s talk about Female Entrepreneurship, a Rising Force in today’s Business World

Female entrepreneurship is on the rise, with more and more women starting their own businesses and making a name for themselves in traditionally male-dominated fields – it goes from automotive to gaming. We are witnessing the evolution from technology and fashion to healthcare and consulting of women carving out their own unique niches and building successful enterprises. Despite facing numerous challenges and barriers, female entrepreneurs are proving to be innovative, resilient, and driven, paving the way for future generations of women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams – whatever they may look like.

Let’s talk some statistics here: according to a report published by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), there are more than 12 million women-owned businesses in the United States, employing nearly 9 million people and generating over $1.8 trillion in annual sales. In all fairness, those are some insane numbers!

In Europe, the number of female entrepreneurs has been constantly going up. The European Commission found that the rate of women entrepreneurs in the European Union has increased by 50% over the past decade. These statistics, both in the U.S and in Europe, clearly show how much the business world has changed, with the numbers expected to increase over the next years.

When looking closer at the gaming industry, there is no exception to the growing trend of female entrepreneurs. In recent years, we have seen a surge of women starting their own gaming companies, developing or co-developing their own games and working as independent game designers and developers. However, gaming is a broad field and includes more than game development. We surely cannot leave out all those incredible women working in marketing and event agencies, have created their own gaming gear (I know some personally) or have even been heavily involved in esports – all which are to me, female entrepreneurs. And surely these female entrepreneurs are not only challenging the stereotype that gaming is a male-dominated field, but they are also bringing fresh perspectives, different view points and ideas to the industry. Whether it’s the creation of games that cater to a female audience or approaching game development from a different angle, or simply make gaming and everything connected to gaming more accessible, these women are making a significant impact on the gaming world.

And this movement dates back to some of the women who have paved the way for us female entrepreneurs in gaming today. One example of such pioneer in the gaming industry is Her Interactive. Founded in 1995 by Megan Gaiser , Her Interactive is a leading developer and publisher of adventure games for girls and women. Another significant example is Tiny Rebel Games, founded by Susan Cummings in 2014, who also has recently founded the Petaverse Network. Tiny Rebel Games is known for its popular mobile game "Doctor Who: Legacy." These are just a couple of examples, but there are many more successful startups and companies in the gaming industry that were founded or co-founded by women, some of which have become my close acquaintances and friends.

It is inevitable that with more and more women starting their own businesses leave a mark in a variety of industries - whether it’s from social media agencies to healthcare startups. It is likely that we will see an even greater increase in female entrepreneurship in the coming years, as more and more women keep breaking through the barriers and shatter the glass ceiling, therefore making it even more important to continue to support and encourage females. It can only lead to a more diverse and dynamic business landscape! Excited times are already here.
